Chargers Lose Second Straight One-Run Game

Box Score For the second straight day, the Lancaster Bible baseball team lost by a run as the Chargers fell to Penn St. Abington, 7-6 in Jenkintown, Pa. on Wednesday. Like Tuesday's game, the Chargers scored once in their final at-bat, but couldn't plate the tying run.

Wednesday's ending was as strange as it gets in baseball. With Justin Taylor and Matt Taliercio on base in the top of the ninth and two outs, senior Kody Godsey drove a ball towards the wall. It appeared as if the ball cleared the fence, but in fact, fell just before the fence. Taylor scored from second, but because it was hard to tell where the ball was, Taliercio was tug out at home after the ball was thrown in by the Abington outfielder and the game ended.

Prior to the strange play that ended the game, the Chargers played fairly well offensively and defensively. Lancaster Bible (6-9, 1-3 NEAC) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Taliercio's fourth home run of the season. Taliercio has homered in three straight games for the Chargers and was 3-for-4 with two runs and two runs batted in on Wednesday.

The Nittany Lions scored three times in both the second and fourth innings and tacked on their seventh run in the fifth. Though Chargers' starter Wade Zweizig gave up seven runs, only two were earned, as errors once again plagued the Chargers. Junior Mitch Kumher came in to relieve Zweizig in the sixth and didn't give up a run or hit through three innings.

Lancaster Bible cut the deficit to 7-5 in the seventh when Taylor scored on a Nate Long fielder's choice, but couldn't get any closer until the aforementioned run in the ninth. Taylor, Godsey and Taliercio all finished with three hits, while junior Caleb Mayer had two hits. Lancaster Bible actually outhit the Nittany Lions 12-7, but just couldn't tie the game.

The Chargers return to the diamond on Friday when they host conference-leader Gallaudet at 3 p.m. Lancaster Bible will also host the Bison on Saturday for a doubleheader that begins at 12 p.m.
