Box Score 2 The Lancaster Bible softball team made history on Wednesday night in Willow Street, Pa. as the Chargers on their first-ever North Eastern Athletic Conference game as they split a doubleheader with Gallaudet under the lights. Lancaster Bible took game one, 5-3 behind a great pitching and hitting performance from freshman
Kelsey Collins, and fell just short in game two as the Bison won, 5-4.
In the opener, Collins was the best player on the field as she pitched a complete game and was 2-for-2 at the plate with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Collins held the Bison bats at bay as she scattered seven hits over seven innings and struck out seven. She carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning and the three runs allowed were all unearned.
In addition to Collins, sophomore
Ali Morton added two hits, while seniors
Nicole Valinteno and
Kathryn Ritter each had a hit as well. The Bison loaded the bases and scored twice in the top of the seventh, but the Chargers withstood the late pressure and ended the game on a good defensive play by
Richelle Kane.
In game two, Gallaudet scored twice in the top half of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead and extended the lead to 5-0 in the fifth. After not capitalizing on chances earlier in the game, the Chargers matched the three runs by the Bison in the fifth to trim the deficit to 5-3. Valinteno fueled the three run inning as her single up the middle scored Kane and
Anna Harris.
The Chargers (2-12, 1-3 NEAC) threatened again in their final at-bat as well as they scored a run on an RBI groundout by Valinteno. With
Emily Lloyd standing on second as the tying run, the Chargers couldn't complete the comeback as the final two batters were put down by Gallaudet pitcher, Montana Murphy.
Morton had two more hits for the Chargers in game two, while Valinteno and fellow senior
Ally Brown also had two hits. Valinteno finished game two with three RBI, while Collins was once again solid on the mound with three strikeouts.
Lancaster Bible is back in action on Friday when they host Penn St. Abington for a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. The games were originally scheduled to be played at Abington, but needed to be moved to Lancaster due to poor field conditions. The games will once again be played in Willow Street, Pa. at Garrett Field.
