Chargers Split Doubleheader with Penn St. Berks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 For as ugly as its game one loss was, the Lancaster Bible baseball team showed it still has some fight left in it this season as the Chargers scored a come-from-behind victory over Penn St. Berks in game two to earn a doubleheader split with the Nittany Lions on Wednesday at Charger Field.

Penn St. Berks controlled game one from the get-go as they scored three runs in each of the first two innings to take a 6-0 lead after an inning and a half. The Chargers got one run back in the bottom of the second, but wasted many opportunities in game one. Lancaster Bible put runners on first and second with no one out in the first, second and fourth innings, but scored just once.

Lancaster Bible's Caleb Mayer hit his first home run of the season in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 6-2, but the Nittany Lions put any thoughts of a comeback to rest with an eight-run seventh inning. The Chargers scored once more, but the Nittany Lions took game one, 14-3. Tom Grablewski led the Nittany Lions with three hits and four runs scored, while Caleb Mayer was 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Freshman Justin Taylor reached base three times, once with a hit and twice via the base on balls.

Game two started the same as the Nittany Lions scored in the first inning thanks to a Kyle Hartman single, but the Chargers tied the game in the third thanks to Taylor's third home run of the season. Penn St. Berks answered right back in the top half of the fourth inning thanks to Ryan Tantala's second home run of the year as he hit a two-run home run over the right field wall.

The score stayed 3-1 until the bottom of the sixth when the Chargers exploded for a five-run inning in which they batted around. The first four Lancaster Bible batters of the inning reached base as Kody Godsey's single scored Micah McClay which tied the game at 3-3. Nate Long doubled down the left field line two batters later and gave the Chargers a 5-3 lead. After Erich Carroll singled, Nate Burns reached on an error and Long came across to make it a 6-3 game.

Taylor came on in the seventh to earn his first save of the year as the Chargers improved to 9-17 overall and 4-11 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. In addition to earning the save, Taylor finished game two with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Long also had two hits to go with his two RBI. Sophomore Wade Zweizig, who came on in relief of starter Caleb Mayer, earned his second win of the season.

The Chargers are right back in action on Thursday when they host Valley Forge Christian for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
