Chargers Sweep Valley Forge Christian

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lancaster Bible baseball team swept Valley Forge Christian on Thursday at Charger Field and broke several game records in the process. The Chargers won game one, 31-2 and took game two, 16-3. The three-game winning streak is a season-high for the Chargers who improved to 11-17 this season. 

The Chargers took control of game one in the bottom of the first as senior Matt Taliercio smashed a three-run home run. Taliercio added to Lancaster Bible's lead the next inning as he crushed a grand slam over the right field wall. Lancaster Bible scored at least three runs in every inning of game one, including eight in the fifth inning. The Chargers had a team-record 30 hits in the victory as each starter had at least two hits. Taliercio led the way as he was 5-for-5 with seven RBIs and five runs scored. 

Freshman Justin Taylor also scored five runs as he was 3-for-6 with three RBI. Caleb Mayer finished game one 4-for-6 with four runs scored and three RBI. Senior Josiah Weaver had two hits to go along with his two runs scored and two RBI. Brett Haller and Chad Williams each had two hits and two runs scored as well. Senior Micah McClay pitched four innings to earn his fourth win of the season, while Ethan Derliunas worked three innings in relief for the save.

The 31 runs is a new program record, breaking the old record of 22 set in 2012 against the same Valley Forge Christian team. 

Game two was a much closer affair for the first three innings as the Patriots led the Chargers, 2-1 after three inning. Lancaster Bible took the game over in the fourth however as a Taliercio three-run double helped fuel an eight run inning and gave the Chargers a 9-2 lead. The Chargers would take on seven more runs and win 16-3. Nate Long and Taliercio each had three hits in game two, while Taliercio added five more runs batted. His 12 runs batted in over the two games are a new program record and he finished the two games 8-for-9 with two home runs, 12 RBI and six runs scored.

The 47 runs scored over the two games is also a new program record, as it broke the previous record of 37 which was set in 2010 when the Chargers defeated Cairn (then Philadelphia Biblical), 21-0 and 16-0 in Langhorne, Pa.

Ryan Hartline was 2-for-4 in game two with four runs scored, while Erich Carroll was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Weaver added two more hits and two RBI in game two, while Jimmy Eagan was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore Wade Zweizig pitched five innings for his third win of the season, while senior Nate Horn pitched the final two innings in which he struck out three batters and allowed just one hit.

The Chargers will host their final regular season game of the year on Monday when they welcome Messiah to Charger Field. According to Lancaster Bible's historical records, the teams have not met since the 1981 season when they split a doubleheader at Messiah.
