NCCAA East Region Champions!

Box Score The Lancaster Bible baseball team completed its NCCAA East Region Championship Series comeback on Friday as they defeated Cairn, 10-0 at Charger Field to claim their third NCCAA East Region crown in the past five years. After dropping game one to the Highlanders on Thursday, the Chargers outscored Cairn, 23-3 over the final two games en route to the series win.

Despite the 10 runs, Lancaster Bible starter Nate Burns was the main event on Friday as he pitched a two-hitter to guide the Chargers to the win. Burns allowed just one walk and struck out five as he improved to 2-3 this season. Burns entered the game with a 6.88 earned run average, but after the game it had dropped over a run to 5.61.

With Burns taking care of things on the mound, the Lancaster Bible offense was hot for the second straight game as they smashed 14 more hits on Friday, including three from senior Matt Taliercio who was 3-for-4 and now has a batting average of .504. Junior Caleb Mayer was 2-for-4 with three runs driven in and a run scored, while Kody Godsey, Jimmy Eagan and Nate Long each had two hits.

Freshman Justin Taylor opened the scoring for Lancaster Bible in the bottom half of the first inning as he led off with a home run, his eighth of the season. The Chargers tacked on two more runs in the second on back-to-back RBI singles from Erich Carroll and Ryan Hartline. Lancaster Bible scored in the third, sixth, seventh and eighth innings as well as they improved to 4-1 this season against Cairn.

Through 35 games this season, Lancaster Bible has four players with 40 or more hits, which is a new program record. Taliercio, Taylor, Long and Godsey have all accomplished the feat as Taliercio and Taylor have over 50 hits. Taliercio's .504 batting average is the best in NCAA Division III.

Lancaster Bible continues the trend of winning the NCCAA East Region Championship in even number years as they won the title in 2010, 2012 and now 2014. The difference this season is there are no longer two divisions for baseball in the NCCAA. The Chargers will be facing scholarship schools at the NCCAA World Series next week in Mason, Ohio, but Lancaster Bible has won nine of its last 10 games and will enter the tournament as one of the hottest teams.

The schedule for the NCCAA World Series will be released in the coming days.
