Box Score After last Thursday's deflating 4-3 loss against Stevenson, the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team had all weekend to think about the late lead they gave up. Monday night in Reading, Pa. the Chargers rebounded as they used four second half goals to break a 1-1 halftime tie and cruise to 5-2 victory over Penn St. Berks.
Freshman
Ivan Correa scored twice in the second half, while
Bradley Wilcox,
Edward Bills and
Dylan Papiernik added the other Lancaster Bible goals. Junior
Josiah Groff added two assists, while Enoc Navarette had one helper.
Penn St. Berks (0-5-1, 0-3-1 NEAC) opened the scoring at the 26:02 mark as Anthony Kidron scored, but the Chargers responded less than two minutes later as
Bradley Wilcox scored his second goal of the year. The game remained tied 1-1 through halftime despite the Chargers holding a 15-3 edge in shots during the opening 45 minutes.
Correa finally put Lancaster Bible ahead just over nine minutes into the second half as he took a through ball from the midfield and scored into the far side of the net. Five minutes later, Correa was at it again as he put away another goal off a feed from Groff.
The Nittany Lions answered right back however, as 50 seconds later T.J. Yurkovic put a ball up and over Lancaster Bible goalkeeper
Andrew Kofstad and pulled Penn St. Berks to within one with 30 minutes remaining. The Chargers (4-3, 3-1 NEAC) continued to dominate play and at 74:56, freshman
Edward Bills converted a penalty kick and restored Lancaster Bible's two-goal lead. Papiernik capped the scoring five minutes later as he deposited Groff's pass into the back of the net.
"I told the guys at halftime that this needs to be a game where we get three points," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "The guys responded and we were able to play quicker and smarter in the second half and it paid off."
Ardt was specifically happy with the play of Correa.
"He had some great goals tonight and was dangerous the entire game," Ardt said.
Lancaster Bible improves to 3-0-1 against the Nittany Lions since 2011, but Ardt said Monday's Penn St. Berks team was not the one they have faced in the past.
"Berks is much improved and they have a lot of good players," Ardt said. "We needed to adjust some things early and were able to do that in the second half as well."
Groff already has five assists this season which is one more than the Lancaster Bible leader had all of last season. The last time a Lancaster Bible player recorded double-digit assists in a season was 2009 when both Lawrence Lartey (15) and Zak Kraehmer (11) accomplished the feat.Â
Through seven games this season, the Chargers have 18 goals. Last season, Lancaster Bible did not record its 18th goal until the 12th game of the season.
The Chargers return to the field on Wednesday when they take on Cairn at 4 p.m. in Langhorne, Pa.Â
