Box Score After both teams failed to score in regulation on Wednesday in Newark, N.J., Lancaster Bible and Berkeley (N.J.) headed the same place they went last year in Lancaster - overtime. Unlike last year when the game ended in a 1-1 tie, the Chargers put together an offensive play that wouldn't be stopped as freshman
Dylan Papiernik picked the most opportune time to score his first collegiate goal and tucked a shot inside the left post to give the Chargers a 1-0 victory five minutes into overtime.
Junior
Josiah Groff found Papiernik streaking down the field and fed the ball to him, creating a breakaway. Papiernik made no mistake as he helped the Chargers improve to 1-1 this season.Â
After a slow start, the Chargers began to find their footing on a hot day in central New Jersey.Â
"We were ball watching in the first half and just a step or two slow in some places," Chargers Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "We got those things corrected at halftime and really did a nice job finding another gear in the second half. I think our depth helped us immensely as we were able to get a spark from a lot of guys off the bench."
In a game that featured a combined 49 shots (Lancaster Bible held a 25-24 edge), Ardt felt as though the Chargers' defense did a great job of limiting Berkeley's chances as they had just eight of those shots go on goal.
"
Ethan Toomey did a great job today as he helped us transition up the field and I thought our defense as a whole did a nice job of shutting them down," Ardt said.Â
Vann Sutphin and
Andrew Kofstad split time in goal on Wednesday as Sutphin made his second consecutive start, but gave way to Kofstad at halftime. The two combined for eight saves as the Chargers posted their shutout since last October 27 when they blanked SUNY Cobleskill, 3-0.
Groff and freshman
Edward Bills each had a team-high four shots.
The Chargers are back in action on Friday when they open North Eastern Athletic Conference play in Cazenovia, N.Y. Lancaster Bible will take on the Wildcats at 3 p.m. and then face Morrisville State at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening. This is the trip that spelled doom for the Chargers last season when they lost 3-0 to Morrisville State and 5-2 to Cazenovia in the same weekend and sealed their fate outside of the NEAC playoffs.Â
After Wednesday's overtime win, the Chargers are optimistic the trip will be much different this time.
