Stingy Defense Propels Chargers to 14th Straight Win

The Lancaster Bible men's basketball team used a lockdown defense and timely shooting to complete a perfect 3-0 week as the Chargers defeated Wells, 67-42 in Aurora, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon. The victory was the 14th in a row for Lancaster Bible who is now 14-1 this season and perfect 8-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play.

Lancaster Bible's defense was great from the opening tip on Saturday as the Chargers limited Wells to just 9-of-33 (27.3 percent) shooting in the first half. The Chargers led 35-24 at halftime thanks to a 3-pointer at the buzzer by senior Naheer Mirza. Lancaster Bible's defense was even better in the second half as they held Wells to 4-of-20 (20 percent) shooting in the second half. The Chargers outscored the Express, 32-18 over the second 20 minutes and forced 11 Wells turnovers too.

"Just a really great defensive effort today," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Marshall Tague said. "I thought we handled the quick turnaround from last night's game to today very well. This was our third game this week and fifth in eight days and it was a grind, but the guys responded well and we've made some good strides over the past eight days."

Lancaster Bible junior Dondre Perry had a game-high 19 points and added seven rebounds. Senior Albert Suniga had 11 points and 11 rebounds, while junior CJ Dunston also had a double-double as he scored 10 points and pulled down 12 boards.

"Dre benefitted from us moving the ball well and from their over-pressure," Tague said. "Albert has gotten the guys motivated throughout this stretch and has really started playing well. It's been great to see Albert and some other guys get everyone motivated for these games."

The Chargers held a 47-30 edge in rebounds, including a 35-21 advantage on the defensive boards.

"We hit the glass hard and the rebounding was really good today," Tague said. "It's nice to see two guys with double-doubles and another come really close."

Lancaster Bible returns to the court next Friday when the Chargers face Wilson for the first time in program history. The Phoenix are in their first season as a varsity basketball team and are one of three new teams in the NEAC this season. A date with Gallaudet looms next Saturday in the Nation's Capital as the Chargers will look to continue their winning ways.

Next Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Notes:
-The 42 points allowed on Saturday is the lowest amount Lancaster Bible has allowed since the 2007-08 season when the Chargers defeated Washington Bible, 94-42.

-Lancaster Bible is now 5-0 all-time against Wells.
