The Lancaster Bible men's basketball team needed five extra minutes, but the Chargers pushed their winning streak to 15 games on Friday night with a 101-93 overtime victory over upstart Wilson in Chambersburg, Pa.Â
After seeing a 15-point first half lead disappear, the Chargers and Phoenix went back-and-forth late in the second half and when that wasn't enough, the two teams slugged it out in overtime with the Chargers coming out victorious. Lancaster Bible junior
CJ Dunston scored the Chargers first seven points of the overtime period en route to a team-high 25 points as he was 11-of-12 from the floor and grabbed nine rebounds. Eleven of Dunston's 25 points came in overtime as he and the rest of the Chargers scored 21 points in the five-minute overtime period.
"We weren't very good tonight for long stretches and we struggled defensively, but we made enough plays at the end to win," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Marshall Tague said.
Though the defense may have been lacking, Lancaster Bible's offense was running on all cylinders as the Chargers shot an incredible 68.9 percent (42-of-61) from the floor. In addition to Dunston's 11-of-12 night from the field, fellow junior
Dondre Perry was 10-of-12 en route to 22 points, while senior
Albert Suniga was 6-of-10 as he poured in 16 points to go with seven rebounds and six assists.
Broken down, Lancaster Bible shot 63.3 percent (19-of-30) in the first half, 70.8 percent (17-of-24) in the second half and 85.7 percent (6-of-7) in overtime. The 68.9 percent shooting percentage is the sixth highest mark this season in NCAA Division III.
Senior
Corey Leonard was 5-of-5 from the floor for 11 points, while
Luke Roundy was 2-of-3 (four points) and
Jordan Mellinger was 4-of-8 (11 points).
Wilson was led by Marqwon Wynn who had a game-high 27 points for the Phoenix who fell to 3-13 overall and 2-10 in NEAC play.
Lancaster Bible meanwhile improves to 15-1 overall and 9-0 in NEAC play.Â
Saturday looms as one of Lancaster Bible's biggest games of the season thus far as the Chargers take on Gallaudet who currently sits at 7-3 in NEAC South Division, right below the Chargers. The Bison defeated the Chargers last season in Washington, D.C., 73-59 and Gallaudet more than likely needs to win Saturday's game to have a shot at winning the NEAC South Division championship.
"We have to turn it around from tonight for a big game on Saturday," Tague said.Â
Saturday's game is scheduled to tip-off at 3 p.m. in the Nation's Capital.
Notes:-Dunston continues to lead the NEAC in shooting percentage at 66.2 percent.
-Friday marked the first overtime game for the Chargers since last season's 90-87 victory over Cazenovia on February 8, 2014.
-Friday was also the first time the Chargers cracked the 100-point mark since December 6, 2013 when Lancaster Bible hammered Cazenovia, 102-54.
-This was the first-ever meeting between the two schools as this is the first season Wilson has had varsity men's sports.
-The two teams play on the final day of the regular season, Saturday, February 21 in Lancaster.
