Game Recap: Baseball | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Open Florida Trip with Losses

After Mother Nature postponed the start of the Lancaster Bible baseball season more times than we care to remember, the Chargers finally kicked off their season earlier this week in Port Charlotte, Florida as the team takes part in the Snowbird Classic. While many teams have faced the same problem, the rust has been apparent thus far for the Chargers as they are playing outside for the first time since practice began in late January.

Below is a quick recap of each of Lancaster Bible's games thus far.

Montclair State 11, Lancaster Bible 4

Lancaster Bible began its season with a great top of the first as the Chargers scored three runs, two of which came on an RBI double from Jimmy Eagan. The lead didn't last long however as Montclair State, playing in its ninth game of the season, jumped all over the Chargers and scored six runs in the bottom half of the first inning.

The Chargers got a run back in the top of the second to make it 6-4, but would not get any closer as Montclair State scored three runs in the third inning and scored two more in the fifth. Josh Mayer, playing his first collegiate basebal game, was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Chargers, while Eagan finished 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Nate Long and JJ Sanchez also had hits for Lancaster Bible.

Wooster 12, Lancaster Bible 2

Wooster improved to 7-0 for the year with a 10-run victory over the Chargers. Freshman Hunter Gray collected his first collegiate hit as he was 1-for-4 with a run scored, while Erich Carroll and Nate Long went 2-for-3. Long also added two RBI, while Eagan picked up another hit as well. Freshman Mark Sheriff also had his first collegiate hit as he went 1-for-4.

New Paltz 15, Lancaster Bible 10

The Chargers took leads of 4-0, 8-3 and 10-5, but couldn't not hold off the Hawks as New Paltz smacked 16 hits and used an eight-run eighth inning to take the lead and blow past Lancaster Bible. Gray finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored as he hit a three-run triple in the second inning to give Lancaster Bible an early lead.

After New Paltz trimmed the deficit to 4-3, Carroll doubled home two runs in the fifth and freshman Nate Staffieri followed that up a batter later with a two-run single of his own as Lancaster Bible took an 8-3 lead. Staffieri finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI, while Carroll was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.

New Paltz scored two runs of its own in the bottom half of the fifth inning to bring the deficit to 8-5, but Lancaster Bible got those runs back in the next inning as Josh Mayer and Eagan picked up RBIs. New Paltz scored twice as well in the sixth and then exploded for eight runs in the eighth inning as the Hawks sent 11 batters to the plate.

Ryan Hartline was also 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Chargers, while starter Nate Burns went five innings and struck out six.

Lancaster Bible will face New Paltz again on Thursday at 11 a.m.
