Having had a week off due to a cancelled game midway through the week, the Lancaster Bible baseball team came into Saturday's doubleheader with Cazenovia well rested and ready to improve its standing in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Unfortunately for the Chargers, Cazenovia's Chris Schad put together a terrific pitching performance in game one and the Wildcats got a late hit to win game two and sweep the doubleheader at Charger Field.Â
The losses drop Lancaster Bible to 5-11 overall and 1-3 in NEAC play. Cazenovia meanwhile improves to 7-8 overall and 2-0 in conference play.Â
Lancaster Bible is right back in action on Sunday as they host SUNY Polytechnic for a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. Below is a recap of Saturday's games.
Game 1: Cazenovia 4, Lancaster Bible 3Cazenovia's Dan Crozier was a thorn in Lancaster Bible's side all day long and in game one, he provided most of the offense for the Wildcats as he was 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs batted in. He hit RBI doubles in the third and fifth innings, as the double in the third drove in the game's first two runs. After Cazenovia made it 4-0 on a single by Jack Young in the fifth, Lancaster Bible finally got on the board in the sixth inning thanks to an RBI double from
Justin Taylor that scored
Nate Long.
The score remained the same until the ninth when Long doubled home
JJ Sanchez and
Ryan Hartline to cut the Chargers' deficit to 4-3. Also remaining the same was Cazenovia's pitcher, as Schad got the next batter to fly out to complete his nine-inning effort. Lancaster Bible could not take advantage of four Cazenovia errors as miscues on the base paths haunted the Chargers during game one.
Long finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Sanchez and Hartline were also 2-for-4 during game one.
Jimmy Eagan and
Josh Mayer also had hits for the Chargers. Lancaster Bible starter
Braden Elliott went five innings and scattered 11 hits, while allowing four runs and striking out four.Â
Schad finished the day with nine hits given up over nine innings, but he struck out nine and only walked two. Young finished game one 4-for-5 with an RBI.Â
Game 2: Cazenovia 8, Lancaster Bible 7After pitchers had their say in game one, it was the hitters who did the early damage in game two as the teams combined for 12 runs over the first two innings. Cazenovia jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first thanks to a Dan Crozier two-run home run, but the Chargers came right back and sent nine hitters to the plate in the bottom half of the first en route to five runs.
Erich Carroll's two-run double highlighted the inning as the Chargers took their first lead of the day. The lead did not last however as the Wildcats came right back and scored five runs of their own. Crozier once again provided the dagger as he hit a grand slam with two outs to give the Wildcats a 7-5 lead.
Hartline doubled in the third to cut the Chargers' deficit to 7-6 and a fielder's choice by freshman
Hunter Gray that scored
Nate Long in the fourth tied the game at 7-7.Â
The game remained tied at 7-7 until the top of the seventh when Brent Baker hit a single that just went over third baseman
Erich Carroll's diving reach and into left field. Baker's hit scored Jack Young and gave Cazenovia an 8-7 lead. Lancaster Bible put the tying run on in the bottom half of the seventh inning, but could not tie the score.
Justin Taylor finished 3-for-4 for the Chargers, while Carroll was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Gray was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Hartline added two more hits.
Wade Zweizig pitched well in relief as he pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed just three hits and struck out one.
Crozier finished the game 2-for-3 with six RBI's and two runs scored.
