Game Recap: Baseball | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Split Doubleheader with SUNY Poly

Lancaster Bible senior Caleb Mayer picked a terrific time to collect his first hits of the 2015 season as his two hits in game one produced five RBIs and the Chargers overcame a late 5-2 deficit to win, 8-6 over SUNY Polytechnic. The Wildcats exacted their revenge in a big way in game two however as they crushed the Chargers, 18-0 to earn a split of the doubleheader at Charger Field.

The split moves the Chargers' record to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Wildcats are 7-8 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Game one was a pitcher's duel between Lancaster Bible's Zack Leonard and SUNY Poly's Sawyer Haney for seven innings before the bats for each team finally woke up. With the game tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth, the Wildcats used an error to take a 3-2 lead and then extended the lead on a two-run single by Ryan Kelly. The 5-2 lead didn't even last a half inning though as Lancaster Bible put the first three runners on in the bottom half of the inning to load the bases with no one out.

Jimmy Eagan struck out on a pitch in the dirt, but the ball got away from the SUNY Poly catcher and Nate Long scored to cut the Lancaster Bible deficit to 5-3. Freshman JJ Sanchez batted next and continued his spectacular first collegiate season with a two-run single to tie score at 5-5. Fellow freshman Josh Mayer walked to put runners on first and second as he set the table for his older brother Caleb.

Caleb Mayer, who had collected his first hit of the season in the bottom of the fourth, came to the plate and smashed a home run over the center field wall to give the Chargers an 8-5 lead. Mayer, who has not had many at-bats this season as he has focused mainly on his pitching, finished game one 2-for-3 with five RBI and a run scored.

Justin Taylor came on in the ninth and earned his first save of the season, while Mitch Kumher earned his second win of the season as he came on in the eighth in relief of starter Zack Leonard. Leonard pitched well again as he went 7 1/3 innings and scattered nine hits while striking out seven.

In addition to his save, Taylor was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Erich Carroll was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. SUNY Poly starter Sawyer Haney went seven innings and allowed just four hits, while striking out two. Josh Rodriguez had three hits in game one as well for SUNY Poly.

Game two was a laugher as the Wildcats scored three times in the first inning and then chased Lancaster Bible starter Nate Burns in the third as they scored four more times to take a 7-0 lead after three innings of play. While the entire team seemingly supplied the offense, SUNY Poly starter Joe Redmond took care of the rest as he allowed just two hits over seven innings and struck out eight as the Wildcats won game two, 18-0.

Brian Niedergall and Josh Mayer had the Lancaster Bible hits, while Rodriguez went 4-for-4 for the Wildcats. SUNY Poly had 14 hits as five different Lancaster Bible pitchers saw action on the mound. Mark Sherriff, Chris Albright, Ethan Derliunas and Hunter Gray followed Burns as the four relievers did not fare much better than the starter Burns as SUNY Poly scored a combined 11 runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Lancaster Bible returns to the diamond on Tuesday when they travel to Lancaster County neighbor Elizabethtown for a single 9-inning game that is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
