The Lancaster Bible baseball team made the short trip west on Route 283 on Tuesday to take on Lancaster County neighbor Elizabethtown and though the Chargers kept the game close for six innings, the home Blue Jays pulled away late and defeated the Chargers, 8-1. The loss drops the Chargers to 6-13 this season, while the Blue Jays improved to 20-9.
After both teams went scoreless in the first two innings, Elizabethtown got on the board in the third thanks to a Lancaster Bible error and made it 1-0. The score remained that way until the seventh as Lancaster Bible starter
Mitch Kumher held the Blue Jays at bay. Kumher pitched 5 2/3 innings as he allowed just four hits and struck out four.Â
A sacrifice fly, followed by an RBI double and single, increased Elizabethtown's lead to 4-0 in the seventh and they piled it on in the eighth as Nick Lorenz hit a bases clearing triple and then scored on a throwing error as the Blue Jays increased their lead to 8-0.
Lancaster Bible scored its lone run in the top of the ninth as freshman
Josh Mayer singled home junior
Ricky Bisch.Â
Freshman
JJ Sanchez had two of Lancaster Bible's six hits as he went 2-for-4.
Nate Long,
Doug Condran,
Braden Elliott and Mayer each had one hit. Long and Elliott each reached base twice via a walk, while
Doug Gundlach and
Erich Carroll also walked once and reached base.
Lancaster Bible returns to the diamond on Friday when the Chargers host Baptist Bible at 12 p.m.
