Chargers Tripped Up by Mustangs

The Lancaster Bible women's volleyball team began it second straight weekend of North Eastern Athletic Conference play with a 3-1 loss to Morrisville State in Morrisville, N.Y. on Friday night. The Chargers dropped the match by scores of 25-20, 17-25, 26-24, 25-21 and are now 2-2 in NEAC play and 5-7 overall.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead in the opening set, but the Mustangs rattled off nine of the next 10 points to grab an 11-6 lead. Lancaster Bible closed the deficit to two at 17-15, but would not get closer as the Chargers dropped the first set, 25-20. The Chargers had just six kills against seven errors in the first set.

The Chargers turned things around in the second set as they took a quick 8-3 lead and eventually stretched the advantage to 20-12, before winning the set, 25-17. Lancaster Bible had 11 kills during the set and took advantage of 10 Morrisville State errors. The third set went back-and-forth in the early going before the Chargers were able to take a 15-11 lead after a Morrisville State hitting error. Lancaster Bible would eventually take a 24-18 lead, but the Mustangs strung together four straight points to close the gap to 24-22 before a Lancaster Bible timeout. A Morrisville State kill and a Lancaster Bible error sent the third set to a 24-24 tie and the Mustangs completed the comeback thanks to two more hitting errors from the Chargers.

Morrisville State rode the momentum from the third set and jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth set. The Chargers chipped away at the deficit and eventually tied the fourth set at 15-15. The teams exchanged points and a kill from Jenny Lenko cut Morrisville State's lead to 22-21 late in the fourth set, but the Mustangs controlled the end of the fourth set just as they had the third and closed out the set and match with three straight points to win 25-21. 

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible junior Emily Olson had a team-high 11 kills, while sophomore Myranda Kemrer had nine...Alyssa Bowen added seven kills and two aces, while Hannah Gipe had six kills and 11 digs...Grace Scheuerman and Lenko each had a team-high 18 digs and senior Hannah Derr had 32 assists and seven digs. 

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible had 40+ kills for the fifth straight match...The Chargers are now 4-1 all-time against Morrisville State.

Up Next: Lancaster Bible continues NEAC play with a match against SUNY Polytechnic at 2 p.m. and another match against SUNY Cobleskill at 4:30 p.m...Both matches will be played on the campus of SUNY Polytechnic in Utica, N.Y.
