Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Zach Freeman

Bearcats Claw Chargers

The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team dropped to 0-2 on Saturday as the Chargers lost to Saint Vincent, 84-73 in the consolation game of the Lancaster Rotary Tip-Off Tournament at Franklin & Marshall College. The Bearcats improved to 1-2 with the victory.

How it Happened: After falling behind early on Friday night and trailing the entire first half against Franklin & Marshall, the Chargers found themselves in the same predicament on Saturday evening as Saint Vincent grabbed an early advantage and eventually took a 12-point lead at 25-13 with 11:55 remaining. The Chargers chopped the deficit to seven at 27-20 on a layup from Brett Cataudella at 10:17, but the Bearcats built the lead right back up to 11 at 31-20 after back-to-back baskets.

Lancaster Bible continued to chip away at Saint Vincent's lead and a layup from Herbie Brown with 7:19 remaining cut the Chargers' deficit to four at 35-31. Saint Vincent continued to lead however for the rest of the half as the Bearcats built their lead back to nine several more times. Unlike Friday where the Chargers trailed by double digits heading into the break, Lancaster Bible hung around long enough to cut the Bearcats' lead to four as Micah Brown converted a three-point play with 32 seconds to go in the first half and the Chargers trailed just 51-47 heading into halftime.

The Chargers, for the second straight night, stormed out of the gate in the second half and scored the first six points of the half to take a two-point lead. A bucket by Alex Whitt, followed by two straight baskets from Herbie Brown, ignited Lancaster Bible's offense and the Chargers had their first lead since a 6-5 advantage early in the first half. The teams exchanged baskets over the next few minutes and after Bill Livezey went 1-of-2 from the free throw line at 13:29, the game was knotted at 58-58.

Lancaster Bible's offense went cold following Livezey's free throw and the Chargers scored just four points over the next 8:37. The Bearcats didn't shoot well either, but by the time Austin Brown knocked down a 3-pointer with 4:52 remaining, Lancaster Bible trailed 71-65. Herbie Brown followed with another 3-pointer to cut the deficit to three and after free throw by the Bearcats, Herbie Brown knocked down two free throws of his own to make it a 72-70 game.

After two straight buckets by Saint Vincent, Austin Brown drained another 3-pointer to make it 76-73 Bearcats with 3:17 to play. Unfortunately for the Chargers, those would be the final points of the game for Lancaster Bible and Saint Vincent made four free throws down the stretch to seal the game.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot just 41.1 percent (23-of-56) and just 32 percent (8-of-25) in the second half...The Chargers were once again led by the Browns as Micah had a team-high 17, Herbie had 16 and Austin had 15 on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting night...Jason Kuntzelman had five points and a team-high nine rebounds...Cataudella added 10 points, while Livezey and Alex Whitt each had five...Matt D'Amico had a game-high 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting.

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 0-2 all-time against Saint Vincent...The Bearcats defeated the Chargers, 66-49 during the 2010-11 season at a Coaches vs. Cancer tournament hosted by Mount Aloysius...Micah Brown was named to the All-Tournament Team following the game for his two stellar performances on Friday and Saturday.

Up Next: Lancaster Bible will be off for Thanksgiving and returns to the court on Wednesday, November 30  when the Chargers open North Eastern Athletic Conference play against Penn College...The game, in Williamsport, is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
