After having to wait until St. Patrick's Day to begin their season, the members of the Lancaster Bible women's tennis team have made the most of their early season matches as the Chargers dropped a hard-fought battle to Penn St. Harrisburg, 6-3 on opening day and then rebounded to defeat Trinity (D.C.) on Tuesday afternoon in the nation's capital.
Penn St. Harrisburg 6, Lancaster Bible 3Due to having just five players, the Chargers were forced to forfeit number three doubles and number six singles, but the number two doubles team of
Kayla Weaser and
Brianne Smith was able to earn a hard-fought, 8-6 victory and Lancaster Bible trailed just, 3-1 following doubles play and the forfeits.Â
Lancaster Bible continued to battle, but could not overcome the Nittany Lions. The Chargers did get wins from
Stephanie Blest at number four singles and freshman
Hannah Zehall won her first collegiate tennis match with a victory at number five singles. Blest defeated Fay Ansary, 6-4, 6-1, while Zehall took down Kiara Carter, 6-1, 6-2 as the Chargers won two of the five singles matches.
Lancaster Bible 5, Trinity (D.C.) 4The Chargers overcame an early deficit due to forfeiting three matches and won their first match of the season. Lancaster Bible won both doubles matches that were played as Smith and Weaser won at number one doubles, 8-5 and Blest and Zehall won at number two doubles, 8-5.
In singles, Blest and Zehall picked up easy wins as Blest won, 6-3, 6-3 at number three singles and Zehall cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number four singles. Weaser lost a hard fought match at number two singles as she fell, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 10-8. Smith earned her first-ever victory at number one singles as she won, 6-4, 2-6, 10-4.Â
Lancaster Bible returns to the court on Monday when the Chargers host Hood at 3:30 p.m. The match will be played at Linden Hall School in Lititz, Pa.
