Staten Island Sweeps Chargers

The Lancaster Bible baseball team continued its spring break trip on Monday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. and lost twice to Staten Island. The Chargers dropped game one, 4-1 and lost game two, 6-4. Lancaster Bible is 2-5 after the losses, while Staten Island improved to 5-1.

How it Happened: After a scoreless first inning, Staten Island scored twice in the bottom of the second, with the second run coming via a Lancaster Bible error. The Chargers got a run back in the top half of the third inning as freshman Will Welsh knocked in Justin Taylor with an RBI single. The Dolphins responded an inning later when they scored two more runs and chased Lancaster Bible starter Frank McCreary. McCreary pitched well though as he allowed five hits and four runs in four innings of work.

Lancaster Bible put runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not capitalize and lost game one, 4-1.

Inside the Box Score: Taylor, Welsh and Hunter Gray each had two hits for the Chargers, but were the only Lancaster Bible players to get hits...Jensen King and Gabe Yoder pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Chargers as Lancaster Bible pitchers allowed just five hits.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Taylor hit his fourth home run of the season and gave the Chargers a 2-0 lead. Chargers starter Hunter Gray was in control until the top of the fourth when an error helped open the flood gates and Staten Island scored five times to take a 5-2 lead. The Dolphins had five singles in the inning and scored all five of the runs with two outs. 

Lancaster Bible cut its deficit to just one in the bottom of the fifth as Erich Carroll tripled home Adam Cohick to make it 5-3 and King scored Carroll on an RBI groundout later in the inning. The Dolphins responded in the top of the seventh and tacked on an insurance run thanks to an RBI double. The Chargers brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom half of the inning, but couldn't push any runs across.

Inside the Box Score: Taylor continued his early season tear as he went 1-for-3 with two RBI...Taylor is batting .440 through seven games this season with 11 hits, including seven extra-base hits (four home runs)...He has scored eight runs and knocked in nine...Cohick and Carroll had the other hits for Lancaster Bible...Cohick reached base twice in three times at the plate...Zach Bonick, Gabe Yoder, Mitch Kumher and Taylor threw the final 3 1/3 innings and allowed just one hit and one run.

Up Next: Lancaster Bible has Tuesday off and returns to the field on Wednesday when the Chargers face Muhlenberg at 10 a.m.
