McCreary's Gem Helps Chargers Split Doubleheader

The Lancaster Bible baseball played as the home team on Sunday despite playing 116 miles from campus as the Chargers and Gallaudet played a postponed doubleheader from Saturday at the home of Bison on Sunday afternoon. Lancaster Bible was to be the home team on Saturday, but rain, snow and field conditions moved the game to Washington, D.C. on Sunday and the teams each took a game as Lancaster Bible won game one, 9-0, but lost game two, 8-2 in eight innings.

The Chargers are now 10-12 overall and 2-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. Gallaudet is 6-22 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

Game 1
Lancaster Bible 9, Gallaudet 0

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible starter Frank McCreary pitched a complete-game shutout as the Chargers collected their third shutout of the season. McCreary allowed eight hits, walked two and struck out one and pitched brilliantly as he threw 100 pitches and allowed the Lancaster Bible defense to do its job.

Lancaster Bible opened the scoring the third inning as senior Erich Carroll hit an RBI single that scored Braden Elliott and Lancaster Bible doubled its lead the next inning as Hunter Gray singled home Will Welsh to make it 2-0. After a Jensen King RBI single in the fifth inning made it 3-0, the Chargers exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to blow the game open.

Josh Mayer and Adam Cohick had RBI singles in the inning, while Welsh hit a two-run triple that made it 8-0. McCreary took it from there as the Chargers won their second NEAC game of the season.

Inside the Box Score: Eight of the nine starters had a hit for the Chargers, including Welsh who finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI...Elliott finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Justin Taylor was 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Game 2
Gallaudet 8, Lancaster Bible 2 (8 innings)

How it Happened: Gallaudet scored a run in the top of the first and held a 1-0 lead until the fifth inning when the Chargers finally got their first hit of the game. King singled and Doug Gundlach followed with a single of his own as the Chargers put two runners on base with two outs. Elliott grounded out, but an error on the play led to King scoring as the Chargers tied the game at 1-1.

Lancaster Bible took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth on Taylor's 14th home run of the season as he deposited a ball over the left field fence. Gallaudet answered in the top of the seventh as Brad Stockdill hit an RBI triple to knot the game at 2-2.

The Chargers went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh and Gallaudet completed the comeback in the top half of the eighth as the Bison scored six runs on five hits and took game two, 8-2.

Inside the Box Score: Lancaster Bible had just three hits in game two, while the Bison had 10...Taylor finished 1-for-3, while King was also 1-for-3 with a run scored...Zach Bonick, Tyler Greenly and Gabe Yoder pitched the first six innings for the Chargers and combined to allow just three hits, while walking three and striking out five.

Extra Bases: Lancaster Bible and Gallaudet split a conference doubleheader last season as well...Taylor needs just one home run to break the program-record for home runs in a season set by Matt Taliercio in 2014.

Up Next: Lancaster Bible hosts Valley Forge on Monday at Charger Field...Game one of the doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m...A class from the Social Work / Counseling Department will be collecting gently used or new blankets for the non-profit, She's Somebody's Daughter and the blankets will be given to those who are homeless in Harrisburg, Pa...There will be a drop-off area near the Lancaster Bible dugout.
