Game Recap: Baseball | | Zach Freeman

Call to Arms

The Lancaster Bible baseball team won twice on Saturday as the Chargers swept Keuka at Charger Field and in the process set a new program-record for wins in a season. Lancaster Bible is now 18-14 thanks to a 10-2 game one victory and a 4-3 win in game two. The two conference wins also improve Lancaster Bible to 8-4 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play and the Chargers are closing in on their first-ever conference playoff berth. The clinching scenarios are complicated as the Chargers have played more conference games than every other team in the NEAC, but at 8-4, Lancaster Bible is certainly in the driver's seat and may clinch a berth prior to playing its final two conference games next Saturday against Penn St. Berks.

Game 1
Lancaster Bible 10, Keuka 2

How it Happened: Keuka opened the scoring in the top of the third on an RBI single from Kyle Dailey, but the Chargers answered in the bottom of the inning as senior Erich Carroll drove in two runs with an RBI single of his own. The Wolfpack tied the game in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Billy McDermott that made it 2-2, but the Chargers offense exploded in the bottom half of the inning and home team blew the game wide open.

Justin Taylor led off the inning with a single and then stole second base. Will Welsh followed with a single that moved Taylor to third. Carroll followed and reached on an error as both Taylor and Welsh came into score and give the Chargers a 4-2 advantage. After two straight outs, JJ Sanchez singled home Carroll to make it 5-2, but the Chargers weren't done there.

Brian Niedergall followed with a single and a walk to Jensen King chased Keuka starter Ryan Caroway. The first pitch Braden Elliott saw from reliever Bryan Johnsen was driven down the left-field line and Niedergall and Sanchez came around to score to make it 7-2 Chargers. Taylor followed with the same outcome as he hit a two-run double that gave Lancaster Bible a 9-2 lead as the Chargers sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth inning.

Welsh added a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning that scored King to make it 10-2, but through all of the Chargers' offense, there was starter Nate Burns firing pitch-by-pitch at the Keuka line-up and getting out-after-out. Burns scattered six hits over nine innings as he threw his first complete game of the season. Burns struck out a season-high eight batters and has now struck out a team-high 34 this season.

Inside the Box Score: Taylor was 4-for-5 in game one with two runs scored and two RBI...Elliott was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Welsh was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI...Carroll was 1-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored...JJ Sanchez was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Game 2
Lancaster Bible 4, Keuka 3

How it Happened: Keuka took advantage of two errors by the Chargers in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead, but Lancaster Bible answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning as Taylor doubled home Elliott. Lancaster Bible pitcher Zack Leonard took over from there as he mowed down the Wolfpack inning-after-inning. Keuka game two starter Kyle Michaud pitched well too, but the Chargers helped out as well as the home team left four combined runners on base in the second, third and fourth innings.

Leonard allowed just one base runner from the second inning through the sixth and even that runner he picked off as Leonard fired over to first in the third inning to nab John Rizzo.

The Chargers gave Leonard some run support in the fifth as King drew a walk to lead off the inning and Elliott singled to put runners on first and second with no one out. Taylor laid down what was to be a sacrifice bunt, but Taylor put it in a perfect spot and beat the throw to first for an infield hit to load the bases. Welsh followed with a two-run single that gave the Chargers a 3-1 lead and a Adam Cohick hit an RBI ground out later in the inning to make it 4-1.

McDermott led off the seventh and reached on an error as Keuka put the leadoff batter on for just the second time in game two. A single, followed by an error on the same play, put runners on second and third with no one out. Dave Nuzzo had an RBI groundout that made it 4-2 and Tyler Krowiak's single drove in another run and made it a 4-3 game. With the tying run on first, Leonard got Robert LaRue to fly out to left and then retired Brett Fenton to end the game on a line out to the right fielder Welsh.

Inside the Box Score: Leonard, like Burns in game one, went the distance as he struck out three and allowed just three hits, two of which came in the final inning...None of the three runs scored were earned and Leonard improved to 5-4 this season, with his five wins leading the team...Elliott was 3-for-4 with two runs scored...Taylor was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI...Welsh finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and JJ Sanchez had the other Lancaster Bible as he went 1-for-2.

Extra Bases: Elliott has raised his batting average 1.27 over the past two weeks as he has become one of Lancaster Bible's best hitters as he is now batting .385 this year...Taylor is three RBI away from tying the program-record for runs batted in, in a single season...Matt Taliercio's 54 RBI during the 2014 season are currently the most in program history...Lancaster Bible is now 4-7 all-time against Keuka.
