Power Up

After the Lancaster Bible pitchers stole the show in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Keuka, the hitters took their turn on Tuesday as the Chargers hit eight home runs and cracked 35 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Summit. Lancaster Bible won game one, 22-3 and took a rain-shortened game two, 12-1 in five innings. The victories, the fourth and fifth in a row for the Chargers, propel the team to a 20-14 overall record, while Summit dropped to 5-26-1.

Game 1
Lancaster Bible 22, Summit 3

How it Happened: Summit put the first two batters on base due to walks, but game one starter Gabe Yoder retired the next three hits via the strikeout and got the Chargers out of the inning. The offense wasted little time as Braden Elliott drew a walk and Justin Taylor followed with his 17th home run of the season over the right-field wall. Freshman Will Welsh hit the very next pitch over the center-field wall and gave the Chargers a 3-0 lead.

Yoder got out of a jam in the second inning as well and the Chargers offense went right back to work as Hunter Gray smashed his second home run of the season over the left-field wall. Taylor came to the plate later in the inning with the bases loaded and hit a two-run single that gave him 55 runs batted in for the season and set a new program-record. Welsh and Erich Carroll collected RBIs later in the inning as Lancaster Bible led 8-0 after two innings.

For the second time in three innings, Yoder struck out the side after allowing the first two batters to reach bases and Lancaster Bible plated six more runs in the bottom half of the inning and led 14-0 after three innings. During the third, Jensen King hit a three-run home run and Welsh hammered his second homer of the game as his two-run shot scored Taylor and made it 14-0.

Summit scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, but Lancaster Bible scored four more times in the fifth, highlighted by Gray's second home run of the day, this one a three-run shot that scored Josh Mayer and Jared Leopold. Mark Sheriff and Jacob Schenck also picked up singles in the inning as the Chargers had seven hits in the fifth inning.

The Defenders scored again in the sixth, but Lancaster Bible answered with four runs again in the bottom half as Tyler Newton's two-run single highlighted the four-run inning. Mitch Kumher pitched a scoreless seventh inning to clinch the 22-3 win.
