Chargers Seven Game Winning Streak Snapped

They say all good things must come to an end and the Lancaster Bible College baseball team found out the hard way on Monday just how tough it is when those things, in this case a seven game winning streak, come to an end.

The Chargers were swept by Penn State Abington on Monday, dropping game one, 10-4 and game two, 5-3. LBC had not allowed double digit runs since their last loss, 15-3 to Eastern Mennonite, on March 15.

The Nittany Lions jumped on the Chargers quickly, scoring six runs in the bottom of the second to take a 6-0 lead. LBC starter Caleb Tribbitt ran into trouble early in the inning and a combination of four hits and three hit batters spelled the end of the day for Tribbitt with two outs in the second. Saturday's game two hero, Justin Long came in and got the final out of the inning and pitched into the sixth inning when he ran into trouble.

Down 8-0 in the top of the sixth inning, the Chargers cut the lead in half, using three hits and two Abington errors to score four runs. BJ Boosz led off the inning with a single and scored two batters later when Frank DiFilippo singled up the middle. Micah McClay stole third base and home to make it 8-2, and DiFilippo scored two batters later when Rob Kumher flied out to center. Matthew Day who had reached on a walk, scored when John Smith IV singled, loading the bases and making it 8-4. Boosz came up again, but grounded out, leaving the bases loaded.

Abington got two of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning and though DiFilippo singled again in the seventh, the Chargers could not mount a comeback and their winning streak was history. Tribbitt took the loss, his first of the season, while Patrick Hart, who came in for Long in the sixth, lowered his ERA to 2.37, best on the team.

Game two was closer, but even more frustrating for the Chargers (7-7). LBC took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, scoring all three runs with two outs. Boosz roped a double that scored Long and Smith to make it 2-0 and scored when the next batter, Josh Chamberlin singled.

DiFilippo, LBC's game two starter, held the Nittany Lions hitless until the fourth when Abington exploded for five runs on five hits. Boosz and Smith singled in the top of the seventh with one out, but Abington got the final two outs to complete the sweep.

"I thought we did a lot to give them game two," Chargers' Head Coach T.J. Horn said. "Frank pitched rally well and we didn't do a very good job behind him."

DiFilippo and Boosz each had three hits over the two games. DiFilippo leads the team in batting average at .380 and has a nine-game hitting streak.

The Chargers return to the diamond on Wednesday when they take on Neumann University at 3:30 p.m.
