Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Stunned by Wolves

The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team suffered a surprising loss on Saturday as the Chargers lost to Keuka, 67-66 in Keuka Park, N.Y. The Wolves entered the game with just one win this season, but played better than the Chargers for large parts of the game and dropped Lancaster Bible to 7-9 this season and 7-4 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. Keuka improved to 2-13, 2-8 NEAC with the victory.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible began the game well as the Chargers used an early 7-0 run to take a 12-6 lead 4:20 into the contest. The offense came to a sudden halt however as the Chargers went 4:23 without a point and Keuka tied the game at 12-12, before junior Bill Livezey knocked down two free throws. Sophomore Jason Kuntzelman ended the field goal drought after 5:11 with a 3-pointer that gave Lancaster Bible a 17-12 lead with 10:29 remaining in the first half.

The teams continued to battle back-and-forth, but Keuka finally gained some separation with under five minutes to play as the Wolves took a 31-25 lead with 4:29 to play. Lancaster Bible turned the tides quickly however and went on a 16-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 41-33 lead with 41 seconds to go. Brett Cataudella, Herbie Brown and Alex Whitt scored all of the points during the run, including seven from Cataudella.

After leading 41-34 at halftime, Herbie Brown drained a 3-pointer 30 seconds into the second half to give the Chargers a 10-point lead. Keuka trimmed its deficit to three just minutes later, but Lancaster Bible responded again and took a 50-42 lead with 14:07 to play thanks to a layup from freshman Luke Beers.

For the second time however, the Chargers offense went into hibernation and Keuka used an 8-0 run to tie the game at 50-50 with under 11 minutes to play. Lancaster Bible regained its slim lead and continued to have the advantage until the Wolves tied the game at 59-59 with 5:25 remaining.

The game went possession-for-possession for the final five minutes with the Wolves holding a three-point lead, 67-64 with under two minutes to play. Herbie Brown converted a layup with 1:06 to play to cut the Chargers' deficit to one, 67-66. Both teams missed two free throws with under 35 seconds remaining and two chances with under 10 seconds to play wouldn't go for the Chargers.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the field, but just 52 percent (13-of-25) from the free throw line...Keuka shot 32.8 percent (21-of-64) from the floor...Herbie Brown had a team-high 18 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists...Freshman Brett Cataudella, playing in his first game in over a month, had 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and eight rebounds...Jason Kuntzelman and Austin Brown each had six points...Greg Tyler had a game-high 20 points for Keuka.

The Coach Says: "We had a bad performance after a bad week of practice," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Zach Filzen said. "There were too many times we lacked focus, intensity and drive. Give Keuka credit, they played hard and wanted it bad, and we didn't show up. We have to learn from this, get back to our foundation and play better."

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 5-3 all-time against Keuka...The Chargers had 25 turnovers, while the Wolves had just 11...Keuka had 28 points off of turnovers as well...Saturday marked the second straight game the Chargers had both 23 field goals and 66 points.
