Chargers Earn Overtime Win Over Lions

The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team played its first North Eastern Athletic Conference game in a month on Sunday and the Chargers defeated Bryn Athyn, 68-65 in overtime to snap a three-game losing streak and move to 3-2 in conference play and 3-7 overall. Bryn Athyn is now 4-6 overall and 2-3 in NEAC action.

How it Happened: As has been the case for the Chargers in 2017, Lancaster Bible got off to a slow start and Bryn Athyn jumped out to a 9-0 lead over the first five minutes of the game. Lancaster Bible was 0-for-6 from the floor with two turnovers in the opening five minutes, but the Chargers maintained their composure and eventually trailed just 15-10 with 11:07 to play in the opening half.

Lancaster Bible continued to get its footing and took its first lead of the game, 21-20, on a 3-pointer from Herbie Brown with 5:12 remaining in the opening half. The teams exchanged buckets in the final minutes of the half, with Quentin Davis knocking down a jumper with just over a minute left to give the Chargers a 26-25 lead they would maintain through halftime.

The Chargers held their lead through the opening minutes of the second half, taking a six-point lead on two separate occasions. Bryn Athyn fought back this time and knotted the game at 39-39, setting up a back-and-forth second half that saw neither team lead by more than six.

Austin Nyekan gave Bryn Athyn a 56-55 on a 3-pointer with 4:49 to play, but Herbie Brown answered 1:34 later with a three-point play as he converted a layup, was fouled and knocked down the free throw, to give the Chargers a 58-56 lead. After Troy Steed went 1-for-2 from the free throw line, Deion Boyer converted a layup with 1:30 to play to give the Lions a 59-58 lead. Bill Livezey was fouled with just under a minute left and was able to knock down one-of-two free throws to tie the game at 59-59. Both teams had a chance to take the lead, including the Chargers who missed three shots in the final 10 seconds, and the game headed to overtime.

Lancaster Bible scored the first six points of overtime and held the Lions scoreless over the first 3:59 over the extra period. Leading by three, 65-62, with under a minute left, Davis increased the lead to five with a layup and iced the victory for the Chargers.

The Coach Says: "It's great to get the first win after break," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Zach Filzen said. "It wasn't pretty at all, but it's good to get the monkey off our back and get back into the win column."

"We found a way to get stops at the end of the game and that is really important for us as we learn how to win close games," Filzen said. "There are still lots of aspects of our game to improve on, but we are starting to pay better attention to detail, which is good for us."
