Chargers Win in Extras

The Lancaster Bible College baseball team moved back to the .500 mark in exciting fashion on Wednesday afternoon as the Chargers came from behind to earn a 10-9 victory over Methodist in extra innings in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Freshman Michael Hill hit  sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the 11th inning to cap the comeback as Lancaster Bible improved to 3-3.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible struggled in the early innings as Methodist jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. The Chargers' bats finally woke up in the bottom of the third as three of the first four batters reached base and junior Josh Mayer came to the plate with the bases loaded. Mayer delivered a single that scored Braden Elliott and during the next at-bat, senior Brian Niedergall scored on a wild pitch while Jensen King and Mayer moved to second and third.

Senior Justin Taylor followed with a triple as he plated King and Mayer to cut the Chargers' deficit to 5-4. Methodist answered right back however as the Monarchs scored three runs over the next two innings and led 8-4 after 5 1/2 innings.

Lancaster Bible got two runs back in its half of the sixth inning as Hill and Elliott had back-to-back singles to bring the Chargers to within two. The Chargers got another run back in the seventh inning as well, as sophomore Will Welsh doubled home Mayer to make it an 8-7 game and Lancaster Bible tied in the eighth when junior JJ Sanchez singled home Hill.

Lancaster Bible senior Gabe Yoder held the Monarchs scoreless in the eighth, ninth and tenth innings, but Methodist was able to get a run in the top half of the 11th inning to take a 10-9 advantage.

In the Chargers' half of the inning, King led off with a walk and quickly stole second base. Mayer's sacrifice bunt was a good one and moved King to third with one out. Taylor singled home King to knot the game at 10-10 and Welsh followed with a double to put runners on second and third with one out. Sophomore Adam Cohick drew an intentional walk and Hill followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Taylor and gave Lancaster Bible the win.
