The Lancaster Bible College baseball team had a spring break trip to remember this past week, and the Chargers wrapped it up in style on Saturday morning, defeating MacMurray (Ill.), 3-2 to finish the week a perfect 6-0. Lancaster Bible has now won nine straight games, and is 9-5 overall this season. The Highlanders dropped to 4-8 on the year.
Game Notes:
-Lancaster Bible opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, as sophomore Sam Taylor walked and then stole second base...After an out, Taylor advanced to third on a passed ball and kept on running, and ended up scoring from second on a passed ball
-From there, it was all Lancaster Bible pitcher Zack Leonard...The senior put the Chargers on his back and began mowing down Highlander hitters...Leonard struck out the side in the third inning, and then got two more MacMurray hitters to strike out in the fourth
-In the bottom half of the fourth inning, junior Colin Myers and senior Braden Elliott each singled to put runners on first and second...Myers would eventually be caught stealing, but Elliot wound up on third with junior Will Welsh at the plate...Welsh continued his torrid pace to open the season and crushed an opposite field home run to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead.
-Leonard struck out two more hitters in the sixth and got out of trouble in the seventh, as the Chargers continued to lead 3-0 after seven innings
-MacMurray finally strung together two hits in the top of the eighth and cut the Chargers' lead to 3-1, ending Leonard's day
-Freshman Trevor High came into the game for Lancaster Bible and got out of the eighth inning with the Chargers still in front by two
-MacMurray tacked on another run in the top of the ninth, but High got Kaleb Denaul to strike out with a runner on to end the game and complete the perfect trip for the Chargers
Inside the Box Score: MacMurray had seven hits, while the Chargers had six...Welsh finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored...Senior Jacob Schenck was also 2-for-3...Leonard threw 7 1/3 innings, scattering four hits while striking out 10, for his second win of the season...High pitched 1 2/3 innings and earned his third save of the season...Neither team made an error...Mason Hale had two hits to pace the Highlanders.
Information Hodge Podge: This was the first-ever meeting between the two teams...This is also the first time the Chargers have ever gone unbeaten on a spring break trip...Lancaster Bible went 5-2 on last season's spring break trip...The nine-game winning streak ties the program mark with the 1980 team that won nine straight games to open the inaugural season in program history.
