The Lancaster Bible College women's tennis team kicked off its season in style on Monday, defeating Penn St. Brandywine, 9-0 in Media, Pa. The Chargers are now 1-0, while the Nittany Lions fell to 0-5.Â
The Chargers used solid doubles play to take advantage of the match early, as the number one team of Greta Strunk and Michaela Dearborn earned their first win together with an 8-3 triumph over Stephanie Bryan and Katie Corey. Lynndath Thelemaque and Sarah Wetzel won their flight two doubles match, 8-6, while the number three team of Haylee Fishel and Lydia Dice won, 8-1.
Strunk, the reigning North Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year, won her first singles match of 2018 on Monday, defeating Bryan, 6-2, 6-1 in flight one singles. Thelemaque won at number two singles, 6-4, 6-1, while Dearborn, a freshman, won her first-ever collegiate tennis match, 6-0, 6-1 at number three singles.
Wetzel was victorious at flight four singles, 7-5, 6-3, while Fishel won her first collegiate tennis match as well, winning 6-1, 6-1 at number five singles. Dice also earned her first collegiate win on Monday, winning 6-3, 7-6 at number six singles.
The Chargers were scheduled to play Trinity (D.C.) on Tuesday in Washington, D.C., but the match has been postponed due to the weather forecast. Lancaster Bible is also scheduled to host Penn St. Harrisburg on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Hempfield Rec Center, but again, the weather may cause havoc with that match as well.
