The Lancaster Bible College women's tennis team split a rare North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday, defeating St. Elizabeth, 8-1 at Hempfield Rec Center, before losing a close match, 5-4 to Penn St. Abington on the campus of Penn St. Berks in Reading, Pa. The Chargers are now 5-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Lancaster Bible 8, St. Elizabeth 1
The Chargers won all three doubles matches with relative ease, as the top team of Greta Strunk and Michaela Dearborn won, 8-3. Lynndath Thelemaque and Sarah Wetzel were victorious, 8-0 in flight two doubles, while Haylee Fishel and Lydia Dice won, 8-1 at number three doubles.
Strunk won, 6-3, 6-1 at flight one singles over Gissel Escalante, while Thelemaque was upended, 6-4, 6-2 at number two singles. Dearborn and Wetzel each cruised to 6-0, 6-0 wins at number three and four singles respectively, while Fishel was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Eucarys Vizcaino at number five singles. Dice won her flight six singles match, 9-8 (7-4) over Debra Pacheco.
Penn St. Abington 5, Lancaster Bible 4
Lancaster Bible dropped all three doubles matches to open the match, as Strunk and Dearborn fell, 8-4. Thelemaque and Wetzel dropped an 8-2 match at flight two doubles, and Fishel and Dice were defeated, 8-2 in flight three doubles.
The Chargers responded in singles play, as Strunk won a tight match over Stephanie Jin, 6-3, 2-6, 10-7. Dearborn fell, 6-1, 6-0 at number two singles, while Thelemaque earned a comeback victory over Marta Tymchenko, 1-6, 6-4, 11-9.Â
Wetzel also won in three sets, defeating Fatoumata Cisse, 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 10-6 at flight four singles, while Fishel was an 8-2 winner at number five singles. Dice fell, 6-2, 6-1 to Isabella Blackwell in flight six singles.
The Chargers are back in action on Saturday when they face Penn College at 11 a.m. in Williamsport, Pa.
