The Lancaster Bible College women's tennis team lost to Penn St. Abington, 5-3 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Semifinals on Wednesday night in Clarks Summit, Pa. The loss ends the team portion of the season, though all six of the Chargers will take part in the individual portion of the tournament beginning on Thursday afternoon, and ending on Friday morning.
On Wednesday, Lancaster Bible lost two of the three doubles matches, as the flight three team of Haylee Fishel and Lydia Dice won a thrilling match, 9-8 (9-7) over Isabella Blackwell and Pamala Dayley. The flight one team of Greta Strunk and Michaela Dearborn came up just short in their match, falling, 9-8 (7-5) to Michelle Mirjani and Marta Tymchenko. The number two doubles team of Lynndath Thelemaque and Sarah Wetzel dropped their match, 8-2.
Â
Fishel tied the match at 2-2 with her flight five singles victory over Dayley, 6-1, 6-3, but Dice dropped her flight six singles match, 6-3, 6-1, followed by Dearborn's 6-1, 6-4 loss to Tymchenko, as the Nittany Lions took a 4-2 lead.
Â
As Strunk was wrapping up her flight one singles match over Stephanie Jin, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4) to get the Chargers back to within one, 4-3, Wetzel dropped her flight four match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, and wrapped up the match for the Nittany Lions.
Â
Because Penn St. Abington had wrapped up the match, Thelemaque's flight two singles match was stopped, and no result was posted.
Â
The Chargers wrap up their season with an overall record of 6-6, while the Nittany Lions improved to 6-7. Penn St. Abington will take on Penn St. Berks in Thursday morning's NEAC Final.
Â
The individual portion of the NEAC Tournament begins Thursday afternoon with the semifinal round for each flight. Strunk (flight one) and Fishel (flight five) are the top seeds in their respective flight. The finals for the women's tennis individual tournament will be held Friday morning.
