Strunk Repeats as NEAC Champion

After falling in a tough match to Penn St. Abington in the team portion of the North Eastern Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament, the Lancaster Bible College women's tennis team made up for it in a big way on Thursday night and Friday afternoon, as several Chargers played solid tennis, including sophomore Greta Strunk, who won her second consecutive NEAC Flight One Women's Tennis Championship.

Strunk, the top seed, opened the Flight One Tournament by defeating Bryn Athyn's Morgan Phillips, 6-1, 6-2 in the Semifinals and then squared off with Alyssa Miller of Penn St. Berks in the NEAC Flight One Final. Strunk who won the NEAC Flight One Title, 6-1, 6-2 last season over Penn St. Abington's Honora Hegarty, completed her title defense in even better fashion this season, crushing Miller, 6-1, 6-0 in the Flight One Final.

Strunk had defeated Miller, 6-0, 6-3 during the regular season matchup between the two teams and used a similar game plan to defeat Miller a second time and become the first back-to-back individual champion in Lancaster Bible history. Strunk finished the year with an overall singles record of 12-2, and was 7-0 in NEAC matches. By winning the Flight One Final, Strunk was also named NEAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year for the second straight season.

In the Flight Five Singles Tournament, Lancaster Bible's Haylee Fishel was the top seed and cruised through her semifinal match against Alair Brock from Bryn Athyn, winning, 6-2, 6-3. Fishel met Lucrezia Pulcini from Penn St. Berks and suffered a 6-1, 6-0 defeat, as she collected a second place finish. Fishel capped her first season on the team with an 8-5 singles record.

Lancaster Bible's Lynndath Thelemaque was the third seed in the Flight Two Tournament, and though she won the first, lost in her semifinal match, 2-6, 6-4, 10-3 to Penn St. Abington's Michelle Manjani. Thelemaque faced Bryn Athyn's Marie Daum in the Flight Two consolation match and suffered an 8-6 loss, ending her singles season with an overall record of 5-5.

Freshman Michaela Dearborn was the second seed in the Flight Three Tournament, and like Thelemaque, suffered a defeat in the semifinal round, as she lost to Penn St. Berks' Laura Youwakim, 6-4, 6-4. Dearborn rebounded however in the consolation match, and earned an 8-2 victory over Amber Janelli from Penn College. Dearborn finished the season with an 8-6 overall record in singles play.

Junior Sarah Wetzel was also the second seed, as she competed in the Flight Four Tournament, and like the two before her, she lost her opening match, falling in three sets, 0-6, 6-4, 11-9 to Fatoumata Cisse of Penn St. Abington. Wetzel then lost, 8-5 in the consolation match to Emily Bell of Penn College and finished her year with a 5-7 mark in singles play.

Lydia Dice was the final Lancaster Bible player to represent the Chargers, as she took part in the Flight Six Tournament. Dice, the fourth seed, lost to top-seeded Tessa Caltairone of Penn St. Berks, 6-2, 6-4 in her opening match, and then earned an 8-1 victory in consolation match, taking home third place with a victory over Bryn Athyn's Ashley Walsh. Dice finished the year with a 5-6 overall record.
