Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Zach Freeman

Vixens Outlast Chargers, 3-1

The Lancaster Bible College field hockey team fell to 0-2 in its young season on Saturday afternoon in Sweet Briar, Va., but also made history, as freshman Blessing Bowman scored the Chargers' first goal of the season early in the second half. The Chargers dropped a 3-1 decision to Sweet Briar on Saturday, while the Vixens improved to 1-1.

How it Happened: The game was scoreless over the first 21 minutes, as the teams battled back-and-forth, but Sweet Briar got on the board at the 21:57 mark, and then doubled its lead five minutes later, as Emily Myers scored for the Vixens.

Down just 2-0 at the half, Lancaster Bible took its opening possession of the second half down the field, and Bowman scored the Chargers' first field hockey goal since 1985.

The Chargers kept their deficit at one for the next 20 minutes, but couldn't get the equalizer. With just under 15 minutes remaining, Sweet Briar added an insurance goal, and won by the same two-goal margin.

By the Numbers: Sweet Briar held an 11-9 edge in shots, though both teams had five shots on goal...The Vixens had nine penalty corners, while the Chargers managed six...Goalie Annelise Culbert made two saves for the Chargers.

The Coach Says: "We played two players down again today, and I thought the team played very well," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Becky Elliott said. "Annelise played well, and our defense did a phenomenal job."

On Blessing's Goal: "She self-started, and I told her to just dribble it down the field and score, and sure enough, that's exactly what she did, and I'm very happy for her," Elliott said.

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 0-1 all-time against Sweet Briar...These two teams will play again later in the season, as the Chargers host the Vixens on Oct. 26.

Up Next: Lancaster Bible will travel to Morrisville State next Saturday, Sept. 8, for a 1 p.m. contest.
