Chargers Trap Wolverines in Four

The Lancaster Bible College women's volleyball team won for the fourth time in five matches on Wednesday night, defeating Wesley, 3-1 in Dover, Del. Lancaster Bible is now 7-5 overall, while the Wolverines fell to 4-9, as the Chargers won, 20-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-22.

Match Recap: After dropping the first set to Wesley, the Chargers roared back in the second set, winning six straight points early in the frame to grab an 11-6 lead. Leading by two, 16-14, later in the set, Lancaster Bible won five straight points, the final two coming on kills from Hannah Gipe and Bekah Roberts, and the Chargers went on to win the set, 25-17.

Lancaster Bible jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third set, as junior Ashtyn Bouslog had three kills during the early run. The Chargers continued to lead throughout the set, and three straight kills from Aleah Heyworth, Allison Shuey and Bouslog, extended the lead to 20-12, and Lancaster Bible eventually won the set, 25-14.

The fourth set was much tighter, as the teams went back-and-forth the entire time. Lancaster Bible eventually gained a bit of separation at 18-14, but Wesley rattled off four straight points to knot the match at 18-18. The Wolverines eventually took a 22-21 lead, but the Chargers hung tough, and tied the match on a kill from Gipe, and then took a 23-22 lead on a block from Heyworth. 

After a Wesley timeout, the Chargers made it 24-22 on a Wesley error, and then clinched the match on a block from Roberts.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible held a 45-33 edge in kills, and a 13-2 advantage in blocks...The Chargers had 95 digs, while the Wolverines had 93...Gipe led the Chargers with 10 kills and nine digs, while Heyworth had eight kills, seven digs and four blocks...Roberts finished with seven kills and six blocks...Bouslog had eight kills, a team-high four aces, and 13 digs for the Chargers...Senior Hannah Thompson had a team-high 26 digs, while fellow senior Erin Harkey added 20 digs...Shuey had four kills, 32 assists, seven blocks and 14 digs, while Courtney Goyak added seven kills and five blocks.

The Coach Says: "We came out really sluggish in the first set, but rebounded and cruised in the second and third sets," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Micah Herron said. "We let them back into the fourth set, but fought and were able to finish them off. I told thd team, 'Don't let what you can't do, interfere with what you can do,' and I thought they really bought into that tonight, and I was proud of the way they grinded things out tonight, and were able to pick up the win."

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 6-6 all-time against Wesley...The Chargers lost to the Wolverines, 3-0 last season in Lancaster...The 95 digs on Wednesday were a season-high for the Chargers, as were the 13.5 blocks...A night after posting a season-low four block assists, the Chargers had a season-high 21 on Wednesday.
