Chargers Drop Longest Game in Program History

The Lancaster Bible College baseball team played its final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday in Annville, Pa., as the Chargers dropped a marathon game to Lebanon Valley, 8-7 in 13 innings. The loss drops the Chargers to 11-18 overall this season, while the Dutchmen capped their year at 16-23.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible got on the board in the top of the first, as senior Will Welsh singled through the right side to score Josh Saufley who had walked earlier in the inning. Jacob Schenck walked following Welsh's single, and Adam Cohick was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch with the bases loaded scored Welsh, and moved the other runners up a bag, while Beau Heagy walked to load the bases again. The inning ended with no further damage for the Dutchmen, who then scored a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Lebanon Valley tied the game in the fourth inning, but Welsh singled in the top of the fifth, and then came around to score on a single from Cohick, as the Chargers regained the lead, 3-2. The Dutchmen offense woke up in the sixth, as the home team scored three times to take a 5-3 lead, but again the Chargers wouldn't go away. Welsh doubled to lead off the seventh, and after two outs, scored on a single from Heagy to cut Lancaster Bible's deficit to one, 5-4.

The Dutchmen scored twice more in their half of the seventh inning to take a 7-4 lead, but Lancaster Bible came right back with three runs in the eighth to tie the game at 7-7. Schenck's sacrifice fly scored Nate McFarland, while a throwing error led to Luis Padilla Jr. scoring to make it 7-6. Another error by the Dutchmen followed, and Welsh tied the game at 7-7.

The contest would stay that way through the 12th inning, as both teams had chances to score, but couldn't get anyone across the plate. The bottom of the 13th looked to be going that way as well, as Josh Noll worked induced a double play line-out to get two outs, but a walk, followed by a double, scored the winning run, and the Dutchmen won as darkness approached just past 8:10 p.m.
