Chargers Drop 2019 Opener at Roanoke

The Lancaster Bible College field hockey team opened its second season back as a varsity sport with a 9-1 loss at Roanoke in Salem, Va. The Chargers are now 0-1, while the Maroons improved to 1-0.

How it Happened: Roanoke opened the scoring 2:01 into the contest, as Emilee Wooten netted her first goal of the year. Wooten assisted on two more goals in the opening 10 minutes, and Lauren Heffron's goal with 5:55 remaining in the first quarter gave the Maroons a 3-0 advantage.

Katie Martin and Claire Eisenhart netted goals to cap the first quarter scoring, and Emily Gabrielian scored two minutes into the second quarter to make it 6-0.

Lancaster Bible junior Nicole DeKok scored her first collegiate goal 4:20 into the second quarter, as she took a pass from Corryn Wolgemuth and scored into the back of the cage.

Roanoke scored 36 seconds after DeKok's goal to make it 7-1, and the Maroons added two more goals in the third quarter to produce the final score.

Statistically Speaking: Roanoke outshot the Chargers, 30-2, including 20-2 in shots on goal…Lancaster Bible goalkeeper Chloe Campbell posted 11 saves in her first collegiate field hockey game, while Roanoke also held an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners…In addition to DeKok's goal, freshman Macy Balmer added a shot on goal, and hit the post during the game as well…Wooten finished with two goals and two assists to lead the Maroons.

The Coach Says: "We scored a goal on our first corner of the day, and hit the post on our third corner, so I'm happy with the chances we were able to get off corners, just need to have the ball in that end more," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Becky Elliott said. "I thought Chloe Campbell played great considering it was her first game with the pads on, and once we work on her footwork a bit more, I think she will be just fine. She gave great effort and made some really nice saves."

News & Notes: Lancaster Bible is now 0-2 all-time against Roanoke…The Chargers lost to the Maroons, 9-0 last season to open the year…The assist for Wolgemuth is her first-ever collegiate point…Lancaster Bible is now 0-8 on the road since adding field hockey as a sport prior to the 2018 season.

Up Next: Lancaster Bible continues its opening weekend on Saturday at Eastern Mennonite, as the Chargers and Royals are set for a 2 p.m. contest.
