How It Happened
The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team improved to 2-0 in conference play, defeating Wells College by a score of 71-52 on Saturday, December 4.
Â
The Chargers (4-3 Overall, 2-0 United East) grabbed an early 6-4 advantage when
Tyler Hilton finished a layup in the paint. Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm, combining for 10 points in the first five minutes. After Wells (3-5 Overall, 0-2 United East) tied the game at six, Hilton and
Adam Stoltzfus hit back-to-back layups, sparking a 5-0 run. The Express would close back within a point before
Grant Sareyka hit a layup to make the score 13-10 with 11:20 remaining in the first half. Hilton and Sareyka each finished a layup, giving LBC a seven-point lead. Wells continued to fight back, closing within two points with 7:34 remaining in the half. The Chargers rebuilt a six-point lead and held the advantage into the closing seconds of the half. Wells' Dylan Perry hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, cutting LBC lead down to one point going into the break.
Â
After some halftime adjustment, LBC started the second half fast, with Hilton draining a 3-pointer on the team's first possession.
Jordan Shewbridge came away with a steal and score to give LBC a six-point lead. Sareyka stole the following inbounds pass, quickly getting the ball over to Shewbridge for a corner 3-pointer to put the Chargers ahead by nine points. Stoltzfus added a layup, capping off a 10-0, giving LBC control of the game. Leading by nine, Shewbridge drilled a 3-pointer in transition off a quality pass from Hilton. Wells answered by hitting a 3-pointer, but Shewbridge knocked down another 3-pointer, giving LBC a 45-33 lead. Shewbridge led the team with 21 points, including 17 in the second half. The Chargers built the lead to as large as 19 points, controlling the flow of the game. LBC rolled to a 71-52 victory, improving to 2-0 in United East play.

Coaching Points
"I thought our second half sense of urgency to execute on both ends of the floor was the turning point for us," said head coach
Jon Mack. "Our ability to convert off stops in transition was pivotal for our offense. We turned their 16 turnovers into 36 points for us, which reflected our 17-6 points in transition advantage. Wells is a very dangerous team with their style of play. They are very active defensively so it's imperative that you take care of the ball, get stops and convert in transition. I thought we did all 3 of those things well in the second half. Overall, I was proud of our team's effort and execution this weekend despite battling ongoing injuries and health issues. We did a better job of turning adversity into opportunities this week. We must keep that mindset throughout the ebbs and flow of the season."
