Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Win Second Straight

The Lancaster Bible College men's tennis team won its second straight match to open the 2021 season on Wednesday afternoon, as the Chargers defeated Penn St. Brandywine, 7-2 at Hempfield Rec Center in Landisville, Pa. The Chargers are now 2-0 this season, while the Nittany Lions dropped to 0-1.

Doubles: Lancaster Bible's top pair of Devon Clemmer and Micah Weaver dropped their match, 8-1 to Nishanth Kopri and Tanuj Gaikwad, but the No. 2 team of Malachi Bomgardner and AJ Kwiatkowski picked them up with an 8-2 victory. The No. 3 team of Keven Vallette and Spencer Grogan did not have to play due to Penn St. Brandywine only having five players, and the Chargers led 2-1 thanks to the forfeit.

Singles: Clemmer got some revenge in singles play, as he defeated Kopri, 7-5, 2-6, (12-10). After dropping the second set, Clemmer rebounded, and though he and Kopri needed extra points, Clemmer was able to earn his second singles win of the season with a super tie-breaker victory. Bomgardner dropped his match at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1, but Weaver picked up a forfeit win at No. 3 singles, as did Grogan at No. 6 singles.

Vallette was victorious at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-1 over Cameron Flanagan, and Kwiatkowski earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ben Sarafinas at No. 5 singles.

The Coach Says: "Today was a great test for the top part of our lineup playing against excellent players from Penn St. Brandywine," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Rod Baughman said. "I'm super proud of Devon, as he earned the grind out win that capped a good day for Lancaster Bible Men's Tennis."
