Lancaster Bible Squeaks Past Penn St. Berks, 5-4

The Lancaster Bible College men's tennis team improved to 4-1 this season with a North Eastern Athletic Conference opening 5-4 victory over Penn St. Berks on Tuesday in Reading, Pa. In addition to the 4-1 overall record, the Chargers are now 1-0 in conference play, while the Nittany Lions dropped to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in NEAC action.
 
Doubles: Lancaster Bible earned two of the three doubles victories on Tuesday, as the No. 1 team of Devon Clemmer and Tyler Norris picked up an 8-4 win over Nicholas Weber and Nike Ohline. The No. 2 team of Malachi Bomgardner and AJ Kwiatkowski dropped an 8-1 decision, but the No. 3 squad of Keven Vallette and Micah Weaver earned an 8-0 victory to give the Chargers a 2-1 advantage.
 
Singles: Clemmer dropped his No. 1 singles match to Weber, 6-2, 6-2, and Norris was tripped up at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Curtis Uhle. Weaver battled at No. 3 singles, and won the first set, 6-3, but Collin Hall took the second set, 6-4, and then won the super tiebreaker, 10-7 for the win. Bomgardner earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, and Vallette cruised past Jake Bolles at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Kwiatkowski was fantastic at No. 6 singles as well, and earned a 6-0, 6-0 win.
 
The Coach Says: "I love the depth of our team that showed up again today," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Rod Baughman said. "I was really proud of our No. 1 doubles team of Devon and Tyler, as they captured a big win to get us out to that 2-1 lead after doubles play. I feel like we are continuing to improve as we hit a stretch of NEAC play."
 
News & Notes: Lancaster Bible defeated Penn St. Berks for just the second time in program history on Tuesday, and the Chargers are now 2-12 all-time against the Nittany Lions…Lancaster Bible's other victory over Penn St. Berks came exactly two years ago, as the Chargers defeated the Nittany Lions, 5-4 in Reading on Apr. 6, 2019…Lancaster Bible is 2-0 in road matches this season…Kwiatkowski and Vallette stayed perfect this season in singles action, as the pair is now 5-0…Vallette is also 4-0 this year in doubles action.
 
Up Next: Lancaster Bible hosts Penn College on Saturday at Hempfield Rec Center in Landisville, Pa…Seniors Tyler Norris and Keven Vallette will be honored prior to the match as part of Senior Day, with the match beginning at 1 p.m.
