Field Hockey Suffers Tough Loss Against Sweet Briar

Lancaster Bible 1, Sweet Briar 3

The Lancaster Bible field hockey team traveled to Sweet Briar, Va. to take on the Vixens in another CSAC game as the 2022 season begins to wrap up. The Chargers would fall to the Vixens 3-1 moving the Chargers record to 1-2 in conference play and 3-11 overall.

How It Happened: The Vixens placed pressure on the Chargers right away sending several shots towards the goal early in the first period. The Vixens would control most of the possession in the first period, but the Chargers defense held their ground not allowing a single goal for the first period despite playing down two players.

Period two opened the same way, but the Vixens broke through the Charger defense early to score their first goal of the game. Not but a minute later Hannah Hoffman sent a pass to teammate Alexis Gilbert who would go on to score and tie the game at 1-1, this was Gilbert's second goal of the season.

Coming out of halftime tied 1-1, the Chargers hung tough against continuous attacks from the Vixens. It wasn't until the last few minutes of the third period that the Vixens would find the goal again to take the lead 2-1. With a one goal deficit, the Chargers made every effort to tie it up again, but the Vixens would be the ones to find the goal just one more time in the 56th minute extending their lead to 3-1 and ultimately a Vixen win.

From the Coach: "What a game! They played amazing, despite being down two players. Our defense held strong and our midfield did a great job of controlling the middle and forcing Sweet Briar to find other avenues to attack. Scoring right after they scored was an example of our grit and tenacity, which they showed the entire game. Extremely proud of our efforts today!" – Head Coach Becky Elliott

By the Numbers: The Vixens outshot the Chargers 37-2 and held the advantage in penalty corners 11-2…. the Chargers finished with 13 saves for the game… Alexis Gilbert scored the lone goal of the game for the Chargers on an assist from Hannah Hoffman.

Up Next: The Chargers will finish out the 2022 regular season on the road at Drew College on Tuesday, October 25th at 7 p.m. and then at Keystone in their last CSAC game on October 29th.
