Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Hunter Gerber

Women's Volleyball Keeps It Rolling

(20-25; 25-22; 27-25; 9-25; 15-13)

Following an impressive performance from the women's volleyball team winning both matches on Saturday, the Chargers would look to build off the momentum from the week, and they did just that. The Chargers traveled to York, Pa to compete against non-conference York College (Pa.), winning in a five-set thriller 15-13. With the win, the Chargers reach .500 overall (8-8) and have now won seven of their last eight games including four in a row.

How It Happened: The Chargers would be in for a challenge Monday night. The Chargers would start set one in control with the lead thanks to individual kills from several players, but York would hang around, tying the game six times before the Spartans would take over at the 11th point. The Chargers would find themselves down by a deficit of only two points the rest of the set and would make a strong effort to regain the lead. Grace Farlow would have a block and kill, Morgan Fenstermacher would add a kill, and Chloe King would fire two kills coming within a point of the Spartans but York College would go on to win 25-20.

Starting down a set has been unfamiliar territory for the Chargers in recent games, but the response was key for the Chargers. Again, they'd start ahead but would lose the lead in the fourth point. The Spartans would create a four-point cushion, but the Chargers wouldn't be tamed. After a four point swing and the regaining of the lead at the 18th point thanks to several errors from the Spartans, a block from Hammond and Fenstermacher, and a Fenstermacher kill, the Chargers would run off to a 25-22 win ending the set on a Riley Dodrer kill.

Carrying the momentum with them, the third set would prove to be critical for the Chargers in what would become a five-set thriller. The set would be neck-and-neck the entire time with no team taking a demanding lead. The Chargers would actually find themselves down 24-25 but a York service error, a block from Sophia Ansel and Fenstermacher, and yet another Riley Dodrer finish would secure a set three victory 27-25.

With momentum on their side, it would feel like the Chargers were headed to another key victory, but the Spartans wouldn't let go that easily, limiting the Chargers offensively and winning set four 25-9. With both teams on their toes, set five would prove to be the grand finale of the night. Two kills from Fenstermacher would give the Chargers early points and an early lead. York would respond, tying it at 5-5. The teams would proceed to trade points until a kill from Dodrer and two well-timed service aces would give the Chargers a 10-7 lead. A block from Sheyenne King and Dodrer and another ace from Chloe King would give the Chargers their biggest lead of the night 13-7. But the Spartans would rattle off five kills to put their deficit to one. Grace Farlow would kill the ball to put the Chargers one point away from victory, and a service error from York would end the set and match 15-13 with the Chargers winning their fourth in a row.

From the Coach: "It's great to see our team step up and compete well against better teams. We rallied together and played well as a team." – Head Coach Julie Brubaker

By the Numbers:
  • Chloe King would lead the team with 10 kills and three aces.
  • Fenstermacher and Farlow would add nine kills a piece.
  • King, Hammond, and Fenstermacher would all tally two kills.
  • Faith Helman featured 20 assists and Emma Shaeffer had 18 assists.
  • Leah Helman followed up her Defensive Player of the Week award with 22 digs.
