Coming off a four-game win streak and a huge win against York College on Monday night, the Lancaster Bible women's volleyball team would look to carry the momentum Thursday night. The Chargers would end up doing just that and more as they would go on to beat the FDU-Florham Devils 3-1, continuing their impressive run. Thursday night's win now puts the Chargers a game above .500 at 9-8 overall just before opening United East Conference play.
Â
How It Happened: The first set of the night with the Devils would prove to be a challenge as the set would go on to feature a total of 10 ties and three lead changes. Battling point after point, the Chargers would take a commanding lead at the 20
th point, rattling off five straight points behind two kills from
Morgan Fenstermacher and a
Chloe King kill to seal a 25-20 first set win.
Â
The second set wouldn't look much different with a total of 10 ties and an additional four lead changes. This time the Devils would come out on top, winning a tightly contested 27-25 set. Interestingly enough, the Chargers have given up at least a set in each of their past five wins. The Chargers would hope to continue the same result.
Â
With the match tied at 1-1, the third set would prove to be even more entertaining than the first two. The Chargers would find themselves in an early deficit as FDU scored the first six points of the game. But the Chargers would make a resilient comeback and tie the score at 15 all. FDU would go on to take the lead again until a service error from FDU, and two critical diving defensive plays from the Chargers would give them the 25-22 win.
Â
Looking to finish the match like three of the four past games, the Chargers would fire on all cylinders. Again, the set would be neck-and-neck with no clear advantage on either side. But it was at the 20
th point that Fenstermacher would place two hard hit balls down between the lines, sending the gym into a craze. With a 24-20 lead and win number five in a row on the line, Fenstermacher would line up at the center of the floor to make one final kill, giving the Chargers the win.
Â
It's an exciting time for the women's volleyball team as emotions are running high with the recent success and win-streak. Not only is it nice in terms of wins, but it seems like the Chargers' program is clicking at just the right time and it's been fun to watch. With conference play just around the corner, it will be exciting to see how the Chargers are able to improve going into crunch time.
From the Coach: "The girls fought hard. They showed a lot of resiliency after dropping the 2nd set. FDU really challenged and pushed us to step up our defense. I was proud that the girls finished strong to end the match on our kill." – Head Coach Julie Brubaker
By the Numbers:
- Senior Chloe King had a game-high 17 kills and four service aces.
- Grace Farlow contributed 13 kills and 23 digs.
- Fenstermacher was close behind with 12 kills and 4 blocks.
- Faith Helman tallied 28 assists.
- Leah Helman would have a career-best 34 digs tonight!
