How It Happened
The Lancaster Bible baseball team fell in a nonconference match up with Wilson College, losing by a score of 12-8 on Friday, March 4. The game was called after eight innings due to darkness.
After Wilson (5-0 Overall, 0-0 CSAC) grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning, the Chargers (1-2 Overall, 0-0 United East) had an immediate answer.
Jaden Pinkney started the offense, smashing a double down the left field line.
Blake Greenly crushed a home run over the center field fence, giving LBC a 2-1 lead.
Tyler Cunningham,
Ethan Varricchione, and
Kaden Hunt all reached base, hitting hard ground balls to short stop, loading the bases for
Adam Naylor. Naylor smacked a single through the right side and then the ball got passed Wilson's outfielder, allowing all three runners to score and LBC to take a 5-1 lead.
The Chargers led by three entering the third inning. Varricchione led off with a single into left field and then stole second to move himself into scoring position. Hunt smacked a single into center field moving Varricchione over to third base. Naylor lifted a fly ball into center field, allowing Varricchione to tag up and score.
The Phoenix scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to close back within a single run. The Chargers responded with
Andrew Kidder reaching base with a single and advancing to second on a pass ball to lead off the inning. After
Brian Coburn moved Kidder over to third, Pinkney crushed a double into right center field, scoring Kidder. The Chargers would load the bases later in the inning and Hunt reached on an error, driving in a run in the process.
Wilson kept fighting back, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 9-8 lead. The Phoenix tacked on two runs in the sixth inning and one run in the eighth inning, building a 12-8 lead. LBC could not rally back and the game was called after the eighth inning due to darkness.
