The Lancaster Bible College women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Waynesburg University on Thursday afternoon. With both teams opening their 2022 season, the win puts the Chargers record to 1-0 and the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets' record to 0-1.
Â
How It Happened: The Chargers began the game on their toes as the Yellow Jackets fired off nine first half shots and four corner kicks. The Charger defense held strong, though, keeping the Yellow Jackets scoreless led by the efforts of senior goalie
Erin Mikula who made four critical first half saves.
Â
The Chargers returned the favor in the second half, keeping the ball in attack mode for what seemed to be the majority of the second half. Despite the flood of attacks from both the Chargers and Yellow Jackets, the contest remained scoreless. That was until sophomoreÂ
Jade Weir placed a shot from outside the 18' in the left corner of the goal at the 63
rd minute, putting the Chargers on the board and in the lead.
Â
Following Weir's stellar goal, seniorÂ
Kara Huber would take the ball herself up the middle of the field and send a shot to the left side of the goal right past the goalie, placing the Chargers lead to 2-0 at the 65-minute mark.
Â
The Chargers defense would continue to hold strong despite the Yellow Jackets' best offensive efforts, shutting out the Yellow Jackets in the first contest of the 2022 season.
From the Coach: "I thought it was a great start to our season," said Head Coach
Jake Warren. "We're still building our team's playing style and identity. But today's 2nd half response was huge from the girls and they deserved the win. Now we have a quick turnaround and tough road trip this weekend to prepare for."Â
Â
By the Numbers: The Yellow Jackets outshot the Chargers 12-9… Waynesburg had 6 corner kicks and Lancaster Bible had 2… Chargers goalies featured 5 saves while Waynesburg featured 1 save.
Â
Information to Know: Ironically, Huber and Weir were the first two goals for the Chargers in the 2021 season.
Â
Up Next: The Chargers will travel to Elmira, N.Y. on Saturday, September 3
rd, at 1 p.m. to play their first away contest.
