Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Hunter Gerber

Chargers Close Out Homecoming Weekend with a Big First Win

In what would be the final contest of the 2022 Homecoming Weekend here at Lancaster Bible College, the Charger field hockey team would run away with a 2-0 victory over the Southern Virginia Knights and win their first game of the year. The win will prove to be an important momentum builder as look towards conference play now. The Chargers improve to 1-6 while the Knights also move to 1-6 overall.

How It Happened: The Chargers and Knights would battle back and forth for the first quarter. The Knights would push early with a penalty corner and shot, but the Chargers would bounce back with a penalty corner and shot of their own. The first period would remain scoreless.

Not too far into the second period the Chargers would turn up the pressure and be the first ones to find the scoreboard. Beginning with a penalty corner sent in the box by Molly Gray, Alexis Gilbert would place a shot on goal which would be blocked but would get the crowd cheering. Hannah Hoffman would capitalize on the crowd's energy and take the ball herself up the middle of the field dodging several defenders before placing a well hit shot right into the back of the goal. This would be Hoffman's first goal of the season and the first goal of the year.

The Charger defense would remain strong withstanding several Southern Virginia runs and head into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Coming out of halftime with momentum on their side, Alexis Gilbert would add her first goal of the season on an assist from teammate Molly Gray just a little over four minutes into the game. With a 2-0 lead in the third period, the Chargers would continue to be all over the field having a stick on what felt like every pass. In a great performance from the Chargers, the team would end a great homecoming weekend with a fantastic win.

From the Coach: "This was a big team win tonight and not just on the scoreboard! We were successful because we passed the ball, supported each other, kept our composure, and communicated. Tonight, was a good motivator as we move onto conference play Wednesday. Thankful that we were able to celebrate our senior Rylee!" – Head Coach Becky Elliott

Information to Know: Both Hannah Hoffman and Alexis Gilbert were able to score their first goals of the season tonight leading to five different girls with goals this season!

Up Next: The Chargers will open up CSAC conference play this Wednesday at home against Bryn Athyn College.

Words from Coach Elliott about Senior Rylee Hannon who was recognized tonight: Caring, polite, hard-working, fitness freak, coachable, brave, and a true friend. These are some of the words to describe Rylee Hannon. Last fall Rylee joined our team after we put out a plea for more players. A Florida basketball player that had never touched a field hockey stick, it was courageous of her to try. However, her athleticism, work ethic, commitment, and friendliness helped her to become fond of a foreign sport and become a great teammate! Rylee has been a blessing to this team and to myself. I have enjoyed helping her learn a new sport. The expression of joy in her face when she learns a new skill and uses it in the game is a coaches dream. I am thankful for the numerous times she has shown concern for me. Her kind heart and warm smile lights up a room. Even though we may not see eye-to-eye on weather, I have been blessed by her being a part of this team in the last two seasons. She will be missed next year, but I look forward to how God will use her to bless those she comes in contact in the next stage of her life. Hopefully she will get to experience a good snowfall before she graduates.
