In a much-anticipated game as both the Seahawks and Chargers would come into this match ranked in region IV of the recent United Soccer Coaches poll, the Seahawks would fly away with a 4-2 win. The Chargers fall to 4-2-1 overall and 2-1 in conference experiencing their first loss in United East play. The Seahawks improve to 5-1-4 overall and 3-0 in the United East.
Â
How It Happened: In front of a crowd full of excitement, the game would begin no other way than what people thought… a shootout. Not just 10 minutes into the game the Seahawks would put one on the board, but the Chargers would respond in just two minutes with a goal from
Clark Shreiner up the right side of the field on the assist from senior defender
Tanner Shertzer. Both teams would remain on attack for the rest of the period as the first half saw thirteen combined shots and seven combined corner kicks. Trying to find a breakdown in the stout defenses of both teams, the Seahawks would manage to get past the Charger defenders to head into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
Â
A Seahawk goal coming out of halftime at the 48
th minute would take the air out of the crowd and place the Seahawks with the momentum. Capitalizing on the momentum, the Seahawks would create a larger lead in the 58
th minute setting the lead to 4-1. The Chargers wouldn't give up though thanks to several Charger substitutions, especially
Kyle Hughes and
Owen Nell, who would bring a jolt of energy to the speechless crowd.
Kedric Yoder would keep the ball himself and score in the 71
st minute of the game brining the lead back to within reach, his third of the season.
Â
Despite the best efforts of the Chargers to get something going, the Seahawks would be too focused on keeping the ball out of the box and sending it downfield. The Chargers wouldn't give up but would not be able to find a breakthrough in the defense leading to 4-2 loss and their first loss in United East Conference play.
Â
From the Coach: "Today we lacked a little bit of energy for some reason and that showed at times. Our defensive breakdowns as a whole unit led to them scoring four goals and we couldn't overcome that deficit. We have just one day off before a big opportunity on Monday at Cairn. We'll keep learning and going." – Head Coach Tommy Ardt
Â
By the Numbers: The Seahawks outshot the Chargers 11-9… LBC finished with four saves and St. Mary's two… both teams had seven corners each.
Â
Up Next: The Chargers won't have much time to rest as they head to Langhorne, Pa. on Monday night to matchup against a rival in the Highlanders of Cairn University at 7 p.m.
