Lancaster Bible 3, Gwynedd Mercy 1
(25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 25-9)
How it Happened: The Lancaster Bible College women's volleyball team bounced back from their loss to E-Town last night with a 3-1 win over the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy University on the road. LBC has now won four of their last five contests, while the Griffins have lost six of their last seven.
The Chargers (5-8, 0-0 United East) took the early lead, with kills from
Faith Hammond and
Chloe King plus a service ace from freshman
Riley Dodrer putting LBC up 7-2. The Griffins (4-10, 0-0 Atlantic East) rallied back to cut the lead to two points, and the match remained close for the remainder of the set. With the score being 21-19, senior
Chloe King landed back-to-back service aces to extend the lead to four, then
Leah Helman landed a service ace of her own to cap off set one with a 25-20 Chargers win.
LBC carried the momentum into set two, with
Grace Farlow connecting on back-to-back service aces. A big solo block by
Morgan Fenstermacher gave the Chargers an early 3-1 lead. After jumping to a six-point lead early, the Griffins began to chip away at the lead, sending the ball back and forth for several points in a row. Gwynedd Mercy closed the gap to three, forcing a Chargers timeout. Dodrer knocked a kill later in the set and Hammond, like
Leah Helman in the first set, ended with a service ace to help the Chargers take set two, 25-22.
Lancaster Bible and Gwynedd Mercy traded points early in the third set, with the score tied 9-9. Kills by Farlow and a service ace from
Bethany Pettis helped LBC create some separation as they led by three points. The Griffins would not let up, rallying to take the lead 17-15 and forcing an LBC timeout. The match stayed close through the end, with Farlow and
Chloe King getting kills to keep it even. Gwynedd Mercy prevailed in the end, winning 25-22 and forcing a fourth set in Gwynedd Valley.
The fourth set started like the third, with the score tied 7-7 early on. Back-to-back kills from Farlow as well as one from Fenstermacher propelled the Chargers up by five points. With a 12-9 lead, LBC rattled off 13 consecutive points, closing on a huge run. This run was highlighted by four kills from Fenstermacher and a few aces from the team, with Farlow delivering the final blow to top the Griffins 25-9 and win the match in four sets.
