Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Hunter Gerber

Shenandoah Clips Chargers 84-71

The Lancaster Bible College Men's Basketball team hosted the Shenandoah Hornets on Tuesday night at the Horst Athletic Center. The Hornets used a big second half run to push past the Chargers 84-71. The Chargers now sit 1-3 in their first four games of the season while the Hornets improve to 4-0 overall.

How It Happened: The Hornets got the first bucket and lead of the game, but freshman Daniel King hit a short jumper to get things started for the Chargers. Five straight points from the Chargers on a converted layup from Grant Sareyka and Seth Beers' first of three three-pointers on the night put the Chargers on top 7-3 four minutes into the game.

The Chargers managed to a step ahead of the Hornets with several timely baskets, but a Hornets three-pointer at the ten-minute mark gave them the lead and they didn't give it back for the rest of the night. Another jumper from Sareyka to end the first half brought the deficit to ten points, 36-26, as both teams headed to the locker room.

It was a three-pointer from Malachi McDowell to start the half that brought the Chargers to within nine points. The Hornets kept the momentum from the end of the first half, responding to each basket from the Chargers with one of their own. The Hornets found their biggest lead of the game just under eight minutes left in the game, 71-42.

The Chargers didn't shy away though, continuing to chip away at the large deficit, finding buckets from Sareyka, Dan Starkey, and Connor Storr. Two made free throws and a layup from Nile Austin brought it to within 16, but it was too late as the Hornets finished the game with a 13-point lead, 84-71.

By the Numbers: The Chargers shot 40 percent (28-69) from the field and 44 percent (8-18) from beyond the arc… the Hornets shot 51 percent (32-62) from the field and 50 percent (8-16) from the three-point line… the Chargers finished with 15 assists and 16 turnovers while forcing 17 turnovers… the Hornets won the rebound battle by seven… Sareyka and Beers scored in double-figures for the Chargers with 16 and 13 points respectively, both going 5-12 from the field… Maureon Tisdale-Couch added eight… Evan Makle and Jaylen Williams each had 14 for the Hornets.

Information to Know: This is the first time the Chargers have squared off against the Hornets in program history, the third time this season that the Chargers have faced a team for the first time. Grant Sareyka entered the top-20 on the all-time scoring list tonight after putting up 16 points, sitting in 20th at 1,159 career points in his fourth season.

Up Next: The Chargers will have some time to rest over Thanksgiving before returning for an important conference opener at Gallaudet on Wednesday, November 29.
