The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team squared off against the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College on Saturday night, February 11
th at the Horst Athletic Center. Against a team that is currently receiving votes nationally, the Chargers responded to the challenge, winning 3-2 over the Yellow Jackets. The Chargers have now won three in a row and improve to 6-3 overall while the Yellow Jackets fall to 6-5 overall.
How It Happened: The Chargers came ready to go Saturday night. After trading point after point with the Yellow Jackets for much of the first set, a kill from sophomore
DJ Omogrosso started a 6-0 run leading to a 17-11 lead for the Chargers. A big block from
Hunter Davis and
Christian Herr and then two consecutive service aces from Herr led to a 20-14 advantage and eventually a first set win for the Chargers.
Continuing their impressive offensive performance from the first set, the Chargers started the second set racing to a 7-2 lead with help from a
Dawson Forney kill and block from Forney and Davis. The Yellow Jackets tried to put together several runs of their own, but the Chargers managed to keep their distance behind kills from Herb and Forney. The Yellow Jackets got within one, 22-21, but the Chargers responded with three more points and a 25-22 set two win.
The third set was a little different for the Chargers as they battled neck-and-neck at the start of the set, but something for the Yellow Jackets clicked, helping them to a quick 25-17 win. Now with the Yellow Jackets seeing some light at the end of the tunnel, they came into the fourth set firing and won the fourth set 25-18, sending the match to a deciding fifth and final set.
With just fifteen points to decide the winner and the intensity in the gym raised to its maximum level, the Chargers did what they had been doing all night and responded, taking a 13-7 lead off a Herb kill and block from Forney and Davis again. Randolph-Macon, looking to survive, crept back into competition, scoring four points to make it a 13-11 game. But, like many times before, Herb answered the call, placing two different sets right into the heart of the Yellow Jacket defense to seal the win for the Chargers 15-12 and completing the 3-2 thriller.
