Men's Volleyball Sweeps Brooklyn Tri-Match

The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team traveled to Brooklyn, N.Y. to compete in a tri-match against Medgar Evers College and CSAC opponent Pratt Institute on Saturday, March 25. Lancaster Bible completed a six-set sweep for the day, taking down both teams handly in straight sets. The Chargers improve to 16-9 overall and 4-0 in CSAC play, while the Cougars drop to 4-11 overall and 1-8 in the CUNYAC and the Cannoneers drop to 2-15 overall and 0-5 in CSAC action.

Game One: Medgar Evers, 3-0 Win

How it Happened: The Chargers jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first set behind kills from Elijah Herb and Hunter Davis and a service ace from Christian Herr. Dawson Forney and Michael Myers added kills to extend the lead to double digits, then freshmen Jake Rotelle and Tyler Martin landed service aces to help LBC finish off set one with a 25-13 win.

It was LBC once again starting off strong, leading 5-2 after Forney finished a kill. The Cougars kept the match close until the Chargers went on a five-point run powered by a pair of service aces from Myers. A slew of Charger kills help them power to a set two victory by a score of 25-16 to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

The third set followed just like the first two, with LBC jumping to a 7-3 lead with kills from Herr and DJ Omogrosso. Lots of subs came in for Lancaster Bible in set three, with Ben Latham knocking three straight service aces and a block from Omogrosso and Zach Herb, making the score 12-4. The Chargers continued to pour it on and run away with the set and subsequently the match, taking set three 25-12.

Inside the Numbers
- Davis, Forney and Herr each had six kills to lead the Chargers
- Christian Herr had 15 assists and Elijah Heyworth added 12 dishes
- Herr, Rotelle, and Latham all had three service aces
- DJ Omogrosso had a game-high four blocks
- The Chargers dominated the matchup with 16 blocks and 16 service aces
- Sebastiann Perez led the Medgar Evers with seven kills and two service aces
Game Two: Pratt Institute, 3-0 Win
 
How it Happened: The Chargers and Cannoneers began closely contested, with the score being within one point early. LBC began to pull away as kills from Latham and Omogrosso and back-to-back service aces from Herr extended the lead to 13-7. The Chargers kept pouring it on with aces from Heyworth and Mac Swineford helped close out set one 25-13.

Lancaster Bible took care of business in the next two sets, holding Pratt Institute to less than 10 points both times. They kept up the theme of service aces as players like Herr, Nicholas Vega, and Brenden Ohlemacher-Lonetti found holes in the Cannoneer defense. Vladimir Podgorodniy and Myers both had several kills in the third set to help power the Chargers to 25-8 and 25-9 set wins and a sweep for the day.

Inside the Numbers
- Christian Herr led Lancaster Bible with a season-high eight kills and dished eight assists
- Elijah Heyworth set a career-high with 19 assists on the day
- Tyler Martin matched his career-high with seven digs, which led all players
- Herr and Michael Myers each had four service aces, with the Chargers totaling 16 aces for the match and 32 total aces for the day
- The Chargers had a season-high .611 hitting percentage with only three hitting errors
- The Cannoneers were led by Brooks Reid who had five kills
 
Information to Know: Lancaster Bible is now 4-0 all-time against Medgar Evers and won their first ever matchup with Pratt Institute. The Chargers are now a perfect 4-0 in CSAC play this season and have matched their win total from last season with 16 victories. Lancaster Bible has now locked up a spot in the CSAC playoffs after improving to 4-0 in conference play. Christian Herr surpassed 800 total assists for the season and now has 820 assists, becoming just the second player in program history to record 800+ assists in a season and has the 4th-highest single season assist total. Vladimir Podgorodniy had a career-high six kills while Zach Herb set a personal record with five kills on the day. Mac Swineford landed his first career service ace today, while Myers and Herr tied their personal bests with four aces each.
 
Up Next: The men's volleyball team will return to the Horst Athletic Center to host the Eagles of Saint Elizabeth for another CSAC contest on Wednesday, March 29 at 7:00 p.m.
