The Lancaster Bible College baseball team has been looking for a breakthrough after a tough stretch of games this season, and Monday morning was just that for them after earning a hard fought 12-11 victory over the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks. The win improves the Chargers to 3-14 overall and 1-5Â in United East play, while the Seahawks fall to 6-7 overall and 4-2 in conference.
Â
How It Happened: An offensive outburst would be the best way to describe Monday morning, with both teams totaling double digits in hits and having their fair share of home runs. The Chargers managed to outlast the Seahawks through nine innings to pick up their first conference win.
Â
The Seahawks came out swinging early, jumping to a 4-0 lead after the top of the 1
st inning, a trend which the Chargers saw on Sunday after losing back-to-back games to the Seahawks. But the Chargers responded thanks to a two-run shot from sophomore
Harrison Madagan in the bottom of the 1
st inning and a three-run shot from senior
Blake Greenly in the bottom of the 2
nd inning.
Â
Entering the top of the 4
th inning, the Chargers led 6-4, but the lead began to shrink as the Seahawks sent their own homer over the wall to make it 6-5. Realizing a sense of urgency, senior
James Toney hit an absolute bomb over center field sending three more runs home and the Charger lead to 9-5. Not to be outdone was Madagan, who for the second time this morning stepped up to the plate and sent a solo home run over the right field wall. Chargers led 10-5 after four innings of play.
Â
The Seahawks responded with two home runs of their own to bring the gap to three runs. In the fifth inning, freshman
Dylan Witkowski doubled to left field bringing in teammate
Andrew Kidder, and Toney once again homered in the bottom of the 6
th inning to give the Chargers a 12-7 lead through six innings. Toney was the second Charger to have two home runs on the day.
Â
Looking to close out the game, the Seahawks didn't make it easy as a run slipped through in the top of the 8
th to make it 12-8, and in the last frame to play, a Seahawks three-run shot from Wathen brought the game within one run.
Â
With two outs on the board, freshman
Evan Sareyka sent a fastball into the box that would turn into a groundout to Greenly and give the Chargers a 12-11 victory and their first win since March 3.
