Chargers Sweep Express, Clinch Spot in United East Championships

The Lancaster Bible College baseball team wrapped up their 2023 regular season on Saturday, winning two important conference games over the Wells Express to clinch their spot in the United East playoffs. The Chargers won game one 11-3 and game two 15-5. The Chargers finish out the regular season with an overall record of 16-23 and a conference record of 12-9. The Express fall to 11-27 overall and 4-17 in the United East.
 
Game One, 11-3 Win
 
How It Happened: Following suit from yesterday, Lancaster Bible jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Blake Greenly got it going for the Chargers, sending a double to right center to bring in freshman Dylan Witkowski. Sophomore Harrison Hobdy stepped up, sending a sacrifice fly to left field to score Greenly, then Evan Sareyka grounded out to third base, sending junior Brian Coburn home. In the second inning, Thade Hague extended the lead for the Chargers, scoring off a balk call on the pitcher, and in the third inning, senior James Toney stepped up, sending a bomb to right center to bring in Hobdy and the Chargers' lead to 6-0 after three innings of play.
 
Wells managed to score one in the fourth inning, but the Chargers responded with two more runs of their own from Coburn and Hobdy singles. The Chargers scored three more through six innings, highlighted by a Sareyka two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring the lead to 11-1. The Express put up two more runs in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as the Chargers came away with the 11-3 victory.
 
By the Numbers: The Chargers racked up 15 hits to go along with 11 runs and 9 RBIs… the Express had three hits for three runs and three RBIs, but garnered seven walks… freshman Evan Sareyka went 2-4 with three RBIs and one run… James Toney had two hits for two RBIs and one run… Hobdy, Greenly, Witkowski, and Hunt all added two hits each… Stephen Livingston had one hit and two RBIs for Wells.
Game Two, 15-5 Win
 
How It Happened: With a United East Conference playoff spot on the line, the Chargers jumped out to another 3-0 lead in the first inning after Greenly hit a double, bringing in Witkowski, and Hobdy followed it up with a two-run home run. The Express scored one in the second inning, only to be answered by an offensive barrage of nine runs in the second inning. In the fourth inning, Hunt hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Sareyka, bringing the game to 13-1.
 
The Express hit two home runs in the fifth and seventh innings to make it a 13-3 ballgame until the Chargers brought two more in the seventh inning, extending the lead to 15-3. Wells again got two runs in the eighth, but it wasn't enough as the Chargers walked away with the sweep, 15-5, and the final spot in the United East Conference Championships beginning next week.
 
By the Numbers: The Chargers had seven hits for 15 runs and 11 RBIs… the Express had 10 hits for five runs and four RBIs… Harrison Hobdy went 2-4 with three runs and three RBIs… Witkowski and Greenly added two hits each with Greenly adding two more RBIs on the day… Max Odum had four hits for the Express.
 
Up Next: The United East Championships begin next week and will be released on Monday.
