Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Hunter Gerber

Chargers Stunned at Home, Fall to Gophers in Overtime

The Lancaster Bible College Field Hockey team went up against the Goucher Gophers on Wednesday night, September 13, losing on a late overtime goal 2-1. The Chargers drop to 1-3 overall, while the Gophers improve to 4-0 overall.

How It Happened: The Chargers opened up another non-conference matchup at the Donald H. Funk Field against the Goucher Gophers on Wednesday night. Looking for their second win of the season, it was a defensive battle from the start. Despite the Chargers sending five shots toward the goal and the Gophers sending six shots, neither team found the net in the first half as both defenses thwarted any possible scoring scenarios.

Coming out of halftime, both teams knew they needed to catch a break. The Chargers were the first to find that break when junior Alexis Gilbert placed a shot on the left side of the goal that found the back, giving the Chargers a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the third period.

The Chargers continued to stay strong defensively, hoping to reach full time with a 1-0 lead, but the Gophers answered with just under seven minutes left of play to tie the game. Despite several advances from both sides of the field, neither were able to take the lead before the final horn sounded.

With the Chargers in familiar territory as they, just two weeks prior, beat Eastern Mennonite on an overtime goal, both teams sensed the urgency and left it all on the line. It was the Gophers, however, that got the final break as a rocket of a shot was blocked, ricocheting off the Chargers' goalie and into another attacker who put the final goal in the net. The Chargers fell 2-1.

By the Numbers: The Gophers edged the Chargers in shots 14-9… the Chargers racked up nine penalty corners to the Gophers' five… Alexis Gilbert had the lone goal of the game for the Chargers… Holmes registered two goals for the Gophers.

Up Next: The Chargers hit the road for their first away game of 2023 against Immaculata on Saturday, September 16 at 10:00 a.m.
